I just stopped by REI
and saw the most impressive bike headlamp I’ve seen in a long time. CatEye finally perfected their LED lamps and the new LED-powered HL-EL500 Opticube lamp (no direct-links for REI.com, search for product ID# 710-403) is brighter than most of the big, external-battery lamps (like many NiteRider and ViewPoint models). The amazing thing is that the lamp shines out 1,000 candlepower for 30 hours on 4 AA batteries and weighs just 4 ounces - but the thing only costs $60.
