Hi Lauren. Aside from brewing tea/coffee, we really only boil water to make it safe to drink. The boiling doesn't exactly make it clean though -- it kills most bacteria and viruses but leaves any mud or dirt in, and even clear water that's boiled for several minutes tends to taste like the bottle or pan it was cooked in.

Unless you have no other method to make water safe, stick to a hand-pump filter or purifier.

It would probably taste OK, but what i'm worried about is this. I heard that water bottle type plastic, when heated, realeases toxic chemicals into the liquid or food. I would never ever ever EVER! Do this unless it was an absoulute survival situation.

Hi t,

It's more of a "how to live at a campground ad".

I've known several people who worked odd jobs in the off-season and lived with a bunch of roommates for cheap rent. Then, when it was prime-season for skiing, climbing, kayaking, etc., they'd live out of a tent and car for a few months. It's not technically "homeless" though most of them didn't have any monthly bills or an address that mail could be sent to. They also never thought of themselves as homeless and tried to stay clean and to feed themselves well-enough.

New National Park rules are making it harder, but there are some classic and nerve-wracking stories on the web if you search for "Yosemite climbing bum."

Good point Tim. I think I may be passing on a very lightweight urban legend with that comment:

A quick test with a completely full bladder and only one Efferdent yielded a bubble of air small enough that several of them would barely fill a drinking glass after the whole thing was done. When I opened the valve there wasn't even enough pressure to make the water do anything but dribble out (like usual).

Odds are that a less-than-full bladder or one with some air already in it would need several boxes of Efferdent before you damaged anything.

Great tip. But you'd have to put _A LOT_ of tabs in to burst a sealed Camelbak. I once put in eight to my CB after it turned into a biosphere. The only thing that happened was that the next time I used it, the water was minty-fresh. ;)

I think your best bet at finding a Patagonia Scythe (or any camping gear) at a good price is on <a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-1668963-5463217?loc=http%3A//search.ebay.com/_Camping-Hiking-Backpacking_W0QQcatrefZC6QQfromZR4QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsacatZ16034" rel="nofollow" rel="nofollow">eBay</a>. Some, but not all, US eBay sellers are willing to ship products overseas and many even have brand new items that are being cleared out of stores at prices below retail.

Excellent point Eamon and very well put.

I'll even suggest that the National Park system is entirely in danger, and not just as we know it. Especially since you point out that Park superintendents are "planning for the catastrophe," the conclusion I draw from your reamrk is that we may lose the entire Park system if they refuse to step away from an idealist view to find other sources of funding.

I wholeheartedly agree with Mike on the response to Tom Mangan. What's worrisome is about Tom's comments aren't the points he's making (they are perfectly reasonable points of view, even if I disagree with them). The Park Service is serious trouble, despite having done all that's been asked of them in terms of fiscal restraint, cost cutting and efficiencies. What's at stake is the continued existence of the National Park system as we know it. The problems besetting the Service are almost invisible to the public, and while the debates rage about conservation vs. access, the fact is that the agency which is charged with caring for our environmental and cultural heritage is being bled white.

Park Superintendent's aren't talking any more about the best use of the tax payer dollar, they are planning for the catastrophe. They are organizing what's left of their resources to ensure that there will be some kind of caretaker function, in the hope that someday the voters will wake up to what's going on, and demand that Congress take action.

I mostly agree Brian. Unfortunately police resources in LA are in short-supply (mostly because police funding is too low), so when they go out to give tickets they may spend more time giving $350 tickets to cyclist speeders than they do catching highway speeders to deliver a $150 ticket.

This type of law and ticket isn't unusual in California though. Sometimes they're protecting us from our own decisions, as opposed to other people's actions.

This law limiting cyclists to 8mph is close. I don't agree, but it can be argued that it just lets everyone on the path be less responsible and makes for an "I don't have to look before leaping" attitude. Nonetheless, I don't think that's what was going on here. Here, I think Manhattan Beach was more worried about tourism revenue than individual responsibility.

I think this is a waste of police resources and an unfair law. Even if a person died that was her fault and the fault of the biker. The rest of us should not be punished for the stupidity of two individuals. I am tired of dumb laws. What happened to individual responsibility?

Welcome to the http://www.hikerdeals.com site Tesa - the one shown in this post sold out long ago. Since the Sabre is normally $130 I can understand why you're looking for a sale. Here's what I came up with for current sales:

<a href="http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-1668963-10377142?cm_ven=CJ&cm_cat=1541718&cm_pla=1668963&cm_ite=REI-OUTLET.com" target="_top" >REI-Outlet.com</a><img src="http://www.tqlkg.com/image-1668963-10377142" width="1" height="1" border="0"/> has the Sabre for $79.93, but it's in limited sizes and colors. Right now they have the "Apricot/Grey" color in S. Just click this "<a href="http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-1668963-10377142?cm_ven=CJ&cm_cat=1541718&cm_pla=1668963&cm_ite=REI-OUTLET.com" target="_top" >REI-Outlet</a><img src="http://www.tqlkg.com/image-1668963-10377142" width="1" height="1" border="0"/>" link and then search for item #736642.

Otherwise, you'll have to check some of the generic shopping sites for the Sabre. I wrote about it here http://www.hikerdeals.com/news/internet-shopping-bargain-and-deal-sites-master-list/ - but I'd say your best bet to find this unusual item is with Google's Froogle search, here http://froogle.google.com

Unfortunately that deal isn't available from Steep and Cheap anymore. They do one deal per day until stuff is sold out - so you need to get to them pretty fast.

Steep and Cheap is owned by Backcountry Outlet though, and they have good (but not great) deals on the same stuff. Right now their price is $471.71 for the <a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-1668963-10361957?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.backcountryoutlet.com%2Foutlet%2FBLD0774%2FScarpa-Tornado-AT-Boots-Mens.html" target="_top" rel="nofollow">Scarpa Tornado AT Ski Boots</a><img src="http://www.lduhtrp.net/image-1668963-10361957" width="1" height="1" border="0"/>. That price also gets you free ground shipping - there aren't currently any other coupons or discounts. Also, even with the low prices, both BackcountryOutlet.com and SteepandCheap.com do have great service.

Sorry, Debra. The sale price above is long gone now - and it probably wasn't on the color you wanted anyway.

There is a sale today (2/25/2006) on the <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=*RUJVJRWGpQ&offerid=42083.43924&type=2&subid=0" rel="nofollow">Timbuk2 Metro mini messenger bag</a><img border=0 width=1 height=1 src="http://ad.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/show?id=*RUJVJRWGpQ&bids=42083&type=2&subid=0" /> for 50% off at <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=*RUJVJRWGpQ&offerid=42083.43924&type=2&subid=0" rel="nofollow">Sierra Trading Post</a> (click the links to see it). The closest they have is an olive green with an orange stripe.

If you "have" to get a specific color check out <a href="http://www.timbuk2.com" rel="nofollow">Timbuk2's website</a> and click the "Build Your Own" link at the top.

I guess I can see the attraction to listening to music while you're hiking - after all, most people enjoy that part of trips about as much as I enjoy commuting on the 405. Personally I like hiking, that's why I see so few people while I'm backpacking, but so many (families and big groups especially) packed into campgrounds every weekend.

Light speakers like you mention would be cool too, since headphones make it a bit difficult to actually have a social experience when you're in a group.

I'm not a big hiker, but I am a canyoneering enthusiast - an canyoneering by the very nature of it involves lots of hiking. I guess I would enjoy hiking more if I were hiking in decent locaitons - and not in the middle of a desert wasteland hauling tons of heavy gear and ropes with me.

That being said, it has often been a fantasy of mine while plodding along on a three or more hour approach to have some small speakers attached to my shoulder straps and an MP3 player blasting some enjoyable music to help with the trip.

Since there are no other hikers around when my group is off canyoneering, we wouldn't bug anyone else. The only concern I have would be getting it wet and destroyed - but since an iPod nano would fit well into a Nalgene bottle (with a dry socks for padding) I think that it could be a useable solution.

Yes, battery life for extended trips would be a concern. Most of our hiking is on the order of >6 hours per day. I would certainly not have the audio blasting while I was actually in a canyon - that's the fun part. (And it would just feel wrong to rig a rappel while blasting Aerosmith's "Living on the Edge")

Nice site. Thanks for the trackback on your other article.

Sorry. There were several sizes, though not a full size-run, when I posted it. This is common with the clearance and closeout items I post and I usually try to make a note of it in the post.

<strong>Canister vs. Liquid Fuel Stoves, plus MSR SuperFly only $39.97 & Free Shipping at Altrec.com</strong>

Canister vs. Liquid Fuel Stoves:
Traditional wisdom says that liquid fuel stoves (where you fill & pump up fuel bottles yourself) produce more total heat and have less bulky fuel bottles than canister stoves - like this SuperFly model.
