My favorite softshell jacket yet for winter sports is actually a Castelli cycling jacket from several years ago. The fit and light weight of the Castelli jacket is better for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and (of course) cycling than most of the downhill skiing alternatives I’ve tried.
That being said, the Castelli Greg cycling jacket is a big improvement on my old favorite, plus it’s 60% off at Sierra Trading Post right now. It’s hard to beat the Windstopper membrane and stretchy fleece panels for breathable winter sportswear.
