$52 - Kelty Mirage 1850 Backpack
Kelty was one of the first pack companies to attempt an ultralight backpack about 10 years ago. Their experience shoes in this Mirage 1850 backpack, the Dyneema threads make the fabric stringer and tougher, but help keep the pack weight to just 2 pounds. Only 2 pounds is great for a serious weekend/overnight-sized pack with a fully padded harness, molded hipbelt, and backpanel.
It’s even better that the pack is on clearance for just $52 at Sierra Trading Post. Perfect timing too, since with it’s narrow profile and shovel pocket it will also make a good backcountry skiing pack.
Free shipping link for $75+ orders: The September Sierra Trading Post coupon is free shipping on all orders of $75 and up (this link only for coupon), good until October 3rd, 2007. Only these last 2 links apply the coupon and the discount will appear once you shopping cart total is $75 or more.
$59.60 - Gregory Isis Women’s Backpack, 60% Off

Another great backpack deal, this one from Sierra Trading Post. This one is a “fast and light” backpack. Those quotes mean that even with just 1,500 to 1,800 cubic inches of space it still has a full internal frame and a Wraptor harness. Even stuffed to the seams this Gregory Isis pack will carry comfortably. The narrower back panel and female-specific harness also mean it’s more than a tiny men’s pack. Normally $149, it’s just $59.60, but grab it soon because the Small size is already gone.
$155 - Gregory Lassen Backpack on Sale, XS Only
![]()
If you’re a woman or someone with a small build the Gregory Lassen pack is 50% off in size XS only. Plus, since this is Moosejaw you also get free shipping (on this backpack or any order over $29), no sales tax outside of MI or IL, and 5% back in rewards points.
Back to the pack, it’s a 3,900 cubic-inch top- and panel-loading pack. There’s also side and back mesh pockets and a tilted mesh water bottle holder near the hip. If the pack fits … just $155 is a great deal for a top-quality, warrantied pack with a harness as comfortable as Gregory’s Flo-Form II (yeah, the pack is overstock from 2003, so that’s the last version of the harness, but still very comfortable).
Camelbak Sugar Hydration Backpack 29% Off
![]()
The Camelbak Sugar hydration pack is 29% off at Altrec.com. This is a simple hydration backpack that includes a 70 ounce (2 liter) water bladder, 790 cubic inches of space, and has few external straps and pockets. The harness is designed especially for women, with more curves and a slightly smaller size than normal Camelbak straps.
Currently just $49.95 at Altrec and has free shipping (like all orders of $45 or more) and no sales tax outside of Washington state.

37% Off Black Diamond Shadow Backpacks in 45 & 55 Liter Sizes

These Black Diamond packs are lightweight, technical packs. They’re designed with foam framesheets and flexible Y-frames to move with you during steep hikes and rough trails. The harnesses are thermo-molded foam, so they’re comfortable but not bulky. Both have ski-carrying holders on the sides, dual ice axe/tool straps, and a hydration pouch sleeve. Both packs are highly water-resistant too, but the weight is only 3.5 pounds for both sizes.
The 55-liter Shadow backpack is normally $200, but is only $125 on sale. Available in a 16-19″ frame size with 3356 cubic inches of capacity. Good for a long weekend or lightly-packed, week-long summer backpacking trip.

The 45-liter Shadow backpack is normally $190, but is only $115 on sale. Available in 16-19″ and 18-21″ frame sizes, both with 3746 cubic inches of capacity. Good for a weekend backpacking trip or long car-camping trip (unless you pack really light or move really fast, in which case you already know how big a pack you need).

$85 - Black Diamond Predator, 50 Liter Backpack

Black Diamond has been making really hardcore climbing gear for about as long as you’ve been able to buy climbing gear in the States. This pack lives up to the reputation.
The Predator backpack is a 50 liter pack great for a long weekend of backpacking or schlepping heavy climbing gear into the backcountry. The harness and hipbelt are thermoformed to be stiff and transfer weight to your hips, but soft and comfortable when carrying. The narrow pack body and Y-rod internal frame are great for keeping the load under control and moving easily over rough terrain. At 43% off, just $84.95, the ski holsters, mesh helmet pouch, hydration system pouch, and much more are icing on the cake.
8% off coupon for $88+ orders: The August coupon is out and is good for 8% off all orders of $88+ (this link only for coupon), valid until September 5th, 2007. Only this last link applies the coupon and the discount will appear once you shopping cart total is $88 or more.

$59 - Mountain Hardware Huckster Backpack
![]()
When I managed at a gear store my friend and I spent days looking for a good ski-carrying pack to put next to the rows of snowboarding packs. We didn’t have great luck, but it turned out OK because we were in Chicago and the whole snowboarding thing was overhyped for a place where 400 feet is a lot of vertical.
Too bad the Huckster ski-carrying pack from Mountain Hardware wasn’t around then. This pack is a low-profile daypack most of the year, and a backcountry skiing monster during the winter. Skis can be carried a-frame or diagonally and the aluminum stay and rigid strapdown panel guarantee the skis will stay put comfortably and the pack (& your back) won’t end up wrapped around them. Also has a hydration bladder sleeve, insulated hydration hose, and a big loading panel.
The pack also ships for free and has no sales tax if you ship it outside of Washington state, at Altrec.com.
Osprey Backpack Rain Covers, 50% Off
![]()
Ever been backpacking in the rain?
So has just about anyone with more than a few days of trails under our boots. I used to prefer using a garbage bag with a cutout for the straps and hipbelt and some duct tape to reinforce it and keep it from being baggy, but that was until someone gifted me a packcover. The garbage bag packcover still works if needed, but the fabric packcover doesn’t snag & tear on every last branch along the trail (nor make me glance back all the time so I can collect any snagged bits of plastic that might hang around forever), it’s much quieter, and it’s about the same weight as the garbage bag version.
Normally packcovers are almost as expensive as a small daypack, but the small and large Osprey rain covers are marked down from $34 to $12.98 for the small and $16.98 for the large. Mountain Gear doesn’t do direct-links, so go there and search for “raincover”, the sale ones are blue-gray in the picture and have a red sale price below them.
$110 - The North Face Men’s Prophecy Waterproof Shell Jacket
![]()
Waterproof, lightweight, and on sale. It doesn’t get much better than that in waterproof, breathable shells - but the Prophecy shell from The North Face is also well-designed and durable. At just 10.4 ounces it’s surprising that this shell still sports a fully adjustable hood, pit-zips (!!! - and I like pit-zips so much better than the chest pocket vents that are common on ultralight gear lately), and both chest pockets and a sleeve pocket that’s perfect for lip balm or an iPod. At just $109.99 I’m even more surprised that The North Face kept the price on this shell so low.
The full warranty and quality from The North Face and both free shipping & no sales tax outside of WA from Altrec make this shell a deal compared to generic shop-brands at similar prices. Also, still available in Blue, Black, and Orange in all sizes S - XL.
