Weighing only a few ounces and using pressurized gas canisters, the Primus Micron stove is an ultralight and simple-to-use camp stove. It’s the latest generation of stoves from Primus and weighs only 3.3 ounces, but still boils a liter of water in just 4 minutes. Even better, the burner can be adjusted from very low to very high heat levels easily.

I have two of the older versions of these stoves (the oldest has a melted, plastic piezo igniter – a problem solved on all newer, metal models) and they’re low maintenance and easy-lighting compared to most liquid fuel stoves. The only drawbacks are at high-temperature and altitude (over 10,000 ft) where the pressurized gas doesn’t burn for very long and that the stove on top of the gas canister isn’t as stable as shorter stoves that sit right onthe ground. Grab one of these if you’re an ultralight backpacker or a hiker who doesn’t like having to tweak and toy with the stove.

Kelty was one of the first pack companies to attempt an ultralight backpack about 10 years ago. Their experience shoes in this Mirage 1850 backpack, the Dyneema threads make the fabric stringer and tougher, but help keep the pack weight to just 2 pounds. When I managed at a gear store my friend and I spent days looking for a good ski-carrying pack to put next to the rows of snowboarding packs. We didn’t have great luck, but it turned out OK because we were in Chicago and the whole snowboarding thing was overhyped for a place where 400 feet is a lot of vertical.

Ever been backpacking in the rain?

So has just about anyone with more than a few days of trails under our boots. I used to prefer using a garbage bag with a cutout for the straps and hipbelt and some duct tape to reinforce it and keep it from being baggy, but that was until someone gifted me a packcover. The garbage bag packcover still works if needed, but the fabric packcover doesn’t snag & tear on every last branch along the trail (nor make me glance back all the time so I can collect any snagged bits of plastic that might hang around forever), it’s much quieter, and it’s about the same weight as the garbage bag version.

What does every experienced camper have 10 of, but still needs more? Wide-mouth, lexan Nalgene bottles (no direct-links at REI.com, so search for item #402065 for gray lexan or item #664604 for colors).

So why are these water bottles, normally $8+, far better than sliced bread when you’re camping? Even at this sale price of $5.49?

It’s not just because the loop top makes for easy carrying and the lexan material can stand ridiculous abuse without breaking (I have broken a couple of these though, one when it fell 90 feet on to a hard sandstone landing, while climbing. Another broke when it had frozen overnight and I tossed it only 10 feet, to a sunny spot so it could melt while I cooked – apparently ice and extreme cold aren’t friendly to lexan). The real reason you just HAVE to carry at least one wide-mouth Nalgene bottle on any camping trip is because every water bottle on the market seems to have a slightly different-sized opening, but Nalgene’s is the standard that all other cooking and water equipment attaches to.

For example, most water filters either screw directly to the top of a wide-mouth Nalgene, like the MSR ceramic water filters, or they have a cheap (as in less than $5) adapter that fits onto the top, like the Katadyn Guide water filter that my wife and I own two of (pre-marriage camping gear, I may write Hiker Deals but I’m not that much of a gearhead to keep a spare water filter). Also, some cooking accessories are sized just for the wide-mouth Nalgene bottles too, like the Press-Bot coffee press.

Since you need them anyway, scoop up a few of these wide-mouth Nalgene bottles while they’re just $5.49. And since there aren’t direct-links to REI.com products allowed, search for item #402065 for gray lexan or item #664604 for colors.

Half-Off Victorinox Swiss Army Knives and Multitool

Always useful when something goes wrong, all Victorinox knives and multitools are 50%, or more, off at Amazon.com this week. Each time I break down and pay full price for a new pack, it’s just a week or two later that a better pack shows up at a better price. For example, I wanted a medium-small weekend pack with heavy-duty suspension and enough features that I could carry it all year round – and it had to be relatively lightweight and built to take the beating that I dish out. For example, no matter how many times I’ve told customers and new backpackers not to pick up their pack by one strap, or risk tearing the strap off after a year or two, I still get lazy and do it myself.

This is the “better pack, at a better price”: the Arc’teryx Needle 35 pack is a bombproof, water-repellent pack with a full-duty hipbelt and harness – and it only weighs about 3 pounds. It’s also a top-loader so there aren’t any zippers to blow out in the middle of a trip, plus the Drybag top and four compression straps make it very stuffable when you’ve packed too much or are in a hurry to get things loaded. The Needle 35 also has a water bladder pocket and those compression straps and tool holsters on the sides will help to carry skis or walking poles easily.

A friend just asked if any good weekend-sized daypacks were on sale.
