Late-Winter Down Jacket Sales

Womens Mountain Hardware Phantom down jacket closeoutI really want a new down jacket. Not that I need one right now, but there have been a lot of changes and new designs this season - and most of the new models are on sale right now.

One of the models on sale is the women’s Mountain Hardwear Phantom down jacket. Not many sizes left, but the new 2006 model is 28% off now, just $163.93 at REI-Outlet. (No direct-links at REI, so when you get there search for item: #750302 to go straight to the jacket.)

Mens The North Face Flash down jacketThe Flash down jacket from The North Face is 20% off at Backcountry.com. That’s $183.16 for one of the lightest men’s down jackets around (not counting the pullovers or models with no handwarmer pockets). With narrow-stitched baffles the Flash may not be the warmest down jacket around - narrow baffles mean less rom for down to loft into), but the jacket is super-compressible and easy to carry at just 12 ounces and filled with 900-fill power down.

Big Sale on Small Daypacks from Camelback and Patagonia

Camelbak: Chaos Hydration Pack on saleThe Camelback Chaos hydration pack is on sale at Altrec. It’s just $ 49.97, that’s about 33% off, and covered by Altrec’s free shipping on $45+ orders. Not a bad deal for a 600 cubic-inch pack with Camelback’s new air mesh harness and back pad. The light hydration pack isn’t beefy enough to a-frame a pair of skis, but the quick-release flap can hold-down a snowboard or snowshoes. The best part of this season’s new Camelback gear is the new coating on the inside of the hydration bladder and drinking hose that uses silver to kill bacteria and fungus or mold.
Patagonia Large Inner Limits Pack on salePatagonia Inner Limits Pack on saleTwo serious backcountry board and ski packs from Patagonia are also on sale at Altrec. Both the Inner Limits daypack (to the right in blue) and the bigger (and so creatively named) Inner Limits large daypack (in red to the left) are both $109.97. They’re from Patagonia so they’re about as well-built as gear gets, but I’m still going to go on about how they can both carry skis either a-frame or cross-carry, have shovel pockets, inner skin pockets, and hydration bladders with insulated hoses to prevent freeze-ups.

$120 - Catelli Tristan Softshell/Cycling Jacket

Castelli Tristan softshell cycling jasketIt’s not sold specifically as a softshell, but the Castelli Tristan jacket is an athletic-cut, WindStopper membrane jacket with no insulation and breathable fleece panels under the arms. I have an older model that’s become my go-to shell for active winter sports or cold-weather training. The trim cut is great for running or cross country skiing and the breathability and lack of lofty insulation is awesome when trudging uphill with snowshoes or skins on. Likewise, the lack of insulation makes it easy to slip a don parka over this softshell when you stop for a lunch & catch-your-breath break. Even better, this year’s Tristan jacket’s sleeves zip off, leaving you with a wind-proof, water-resistant vest for spring outings.

Normally $220, the Tristan softshell is just $119.99 at cyling gear shop Colorado Cyclist.

$26.08 - Gerber Butterfly Opening Multi-tool, 43% Off

Gerber Suspension Butterfly Opening Multi-tool Plier and SheathThe Gerber “Suspension Butterfly-Opening” Multitool is 43% off at Amazon. This tool is a bit bigger than the average plier/screwdriver combo and easily fits a full assortment of tools, including a woodsaw, two knife blades, and a better than average pair of scissors. The needle nose pliers are also typical Gerber: perfectly-aligned and not at all clunky. Despie the good pliers and large size of the tool, the drilled-out suspension handle keeps weight down. Plus, free shipping on orders over $25 at Amazon.com means the $26.08 sale price is just enough to score free shipping.

$113 - Patagonia Specter Pullover Waterproof Jacket

Patagonia Specter Pullover GoreTex jacket6.5 ounces. The Patagonia Specter pullover shell is one of the lightest fully waterproof/breathable jackets on the market.

The Specter jacket is also one of the most breathable jackets on the market because it’s made from Patagonia’s H2No Storm membrane and with stitch-free, “welded” seams that don’t require any non-breathable seam tape. Great features include waterproof-coated zippers, helmet-compatible hood, and a zipper offset at the chin. The one big negative is the half zipper - making the jacket an ultralight but somewhat inconvenient pullover.

43% Off - Spyder Overlock Func Long Sleeve Base-Layer Top

Spyder Overlock Func long sleeve underwear shirt saleNot just long underwear anymore, base-layers are what keep everyone dry and warm on the slopes and looking (and smelling - unlike old-school polyester long underwear -) less-than-objectionable when wandering around the on-slope lodge at lunch or the bars at the base. Spyder did base layers right with this Overlock Func long sleeve top. It’s light, longer in the back to stay tucked in, and has no seams on the top of the shoulders so your out-of-bounds pack or Camelback straps won’t rub things raw. Plus, it’s 43% off, just $45, at Sierra Trading Post now.
