REI Coupon: 20% Off One Item, May 4-13th
![]()
A big, fat 20% off coupon for any full-price item at REI is in my Saturday LA Times today. No need to run out and try to track one down though, the 20% off coupon is part of REIs anniversary sale and is good on orders placed by mail and phone too. Just mention coupon code ANNV7 at phone checkout or enter it into the coupon code box online and it will apply to the highest-priced camp, hike, or sports gear in your cart - with some exclusions, see small print paraphrased below.
Of course, the coupon’s small print:
Offer isn’t valid on sale items. REI membership required, but you can join for $15 at checkout. Also not valid on special orders, packages, prior purchases, gif cards, services, rentals, bikes, boats, GPS’s, radios, or locator beacons (for once, ski and snowboard gear appears to be eligible - of course, it’s probably on closeout sale already and thus not eligible as a sale item). Merchandise must be in-stock and purchases with this coupon aren’t eligible for the REI member refund.

50% Off SmartWool Active Wool T-Shirts
![]()
The men’s SmartWool Swoop t-shirt works to maintain a constant temperature for your body whether it’s hot or cold outside. It wicks sweat and dries quickly when it’s hot out and insulates lightly when it’s cold. Marked down from $67.50 to $34.93 it’s a great deal if you run a lot in varied weather or as underwear on long camping trips - wool doesn’ build up oder nearly as quickly as polyester or even cotton. To buy just click through and search for item# 747279 (sorry, no direct links into REI-Outlet).
The women’s SmartWool Swift t-shirt is a trim-fitting, ultra thin active t-shirt. Plus, the merino wool is so soft that it feels more like silkweight polyester than cotton and won’t build up a stink the way that synthetics do when worn on long, sweaty hikes. Still available in two colors and S, M, & L for just $29.93, regularly $60. Again, no direct links, so search for item # 755116 at REI-Outlet.
$84 - KEEN Ochoco Waterproof Trail Running Shoe
![]()
I was in San Francisco two weeks ago and waterproof-breathable trail running & hiking shoes seemed to be popular with the comfort-minded. Though they weren’t quite as popular with the worried about speed, ultra-lightweight gear crowd.
So, if you’re in the market for waterproof trail shoes Backcountry.com has the men’s KEEN Ochoco shoes for 30% off right now. I’ve been surprised by the comfort of my own KEEN casual shoes, so the 5-star rating of these isn’t much of a surprise. The 1-year warranty is a surprise though - wonder if KEEN will say no to obvious wear-and-tear returns or take that Patagonia route and take anything back. Either way, at $83.97 and with free shipping the Ochoco’s are still available from Backcountry in most sizes from 7 to 13 and even in two colors in the hard-to-find-on-sale men’s 10-12 sizes.
$18.98 - Patagonia Capilene 2 Men’s Long-Sleeve Crew, 50% Off
![]()
Patagonia is discontinuing their gray (aka “stainless-whale bone”) color of the Capilene 2 long-sleeve crew. Except in 85+° F heat this shirt is great for keeping the sun off or as a lightweight, non-stinky underlayer. Yes, I’ve complained about Capilene’s tendency to get smelly before, but the new “Galdiodor” treatment works a lot better - even though I still think Marmot’s DriClime & Terramar’s EC2 are a bit better and any brand of merino wool long underwear has all the synthetics beat.
Anyway, the Stainless-color of Capilene 2 top is 50% off at Backcountry.com right now. That’s $18.98, available in sizes M, XL, & XXL for now, and still eligible for their free shipping on $50+ orders deal too.
$12 - Marmot Women’s Short Sleeve Quest DriClime Top
![]()
Marmot’s quick-drying Quest top is on sale at BackcountryOutlet.com. The DriClime fabric is one of the quickest-drying fabrics I’ve ever used, it has a high SPF, and an anti-microbial finish to keep it from getting plain-stinky like most synthetic fabrics.
Right now it’s 60% off, currently in sizes large and extra-small, making it just $11.98 and no coupon required. Plus, grab a few more items and get free shipping on all BackcountryOutlet orders of $50 and up.
Sierra Trading Post Coupon: 7% Off $95+

Update: The July coupon is out and is good for 10% off all orders of $100+. All links in this message to Sierra Trading Post have been updated. June coupon valid until August 1st, 2007.
The other day a friend who I’d always thought of as a deal-seeker told me they probably wouldn’t bother with any sale for 10% or less off. I don’t know if that’s really the case, since they’ve gone to great lengths in the past to use two 20% off one item per person coupons, but I did think of them when Sierra Trading Post released their April coupon.
Good for 7% off any order of $95 and up. Maybe not enough to motivate new visitors to buy, but their already low prices on new, brand name gear keep me going back - and I sure won’t turn down an extra 7% off if I’m already planning to buy.
15% off $100+ at Eastbay Sporting Goods
For me, spring is time for trail running and day hikes, no more heavy boots required to keep the snow out. If you’re looking for new trail running shoes check out the Eastbay sporting goods store and use coupon code LKS173M2 at checkout for 15% off $100+ orders (coupon expires 4/7/2007).
Coupon: Performance Bike 10% Off Everything

Cycling superstore Performance Bike is offering 10% off all orders with coupon code 6001751. Offer includes bikes and sale items (but can’t be combined with other “special offers”) and no minimum order is required (expires 2/24/2007).
No free shipping deals, but the coupon applies to bikes and frames too. With a decent selection of 2006 in the closeout section this extra 10% off could make for a few good bargains. Also, the Travel Trac I-Force trainer that I loved so much this winter is now 30% off in Performance’s winter clearance sale and with this extra 10% off coupon will be just $206.99 - not bad for one of the best trainers I’ve ever tried.
5 Star-Rated Montrail Odyssey Trail Running Shoes, 20% Off
![]()
Backcountry.com has the Montrail Odyssey trail shoes on sale for just $75.96. Customers gave these a 5-star rating for all sorts of reasons, like the fact that even weighing only 12 ounces they’re some of the most supportive and toughest trail running shoes people have tried. I like the fact that they’re medium-volume (ie: not super roomy so your foot doesn’t slide & run on rough trails) and that they’re built for mixed road and trail use - after all most of us don’t have a trail right in the backyard, plus here in Southern California it’s tough to find parking right at most trailheads.
Even bigger savings because these shoes qualify for Backcountry.com’s free shipping on $50+ orders and there’s no sales tax unless you’re in Utah.
$120 - Catelli Tristan Softshell/Cycling Jacket
It’s not sold specifically as a softshell, but the Castelli Tristan jacket is an athletic-cut, WindStopper membrane jacket with no insulation and breathable fleece panels under the arms. I have an older model that’s become my go-to shell for active winter sports or cold-weather training. The trim cut is great for running or cross country skiing and the breathability and lack of lofty insulation is awesome when trudging uphill with snowshoes or skins on. Likewise, the lack of insulation makes it easy to slip a don parka over this softshell when you stop for a lunch & catch-your-breath break. Even better, this year’s Tristan jacket’s sleeves zip off, leaving you with a wind-proof, water-resistant vest for spring outings.
Normally $220, the Tristan softshell is just $119.99 at cyling gear shop Colorado Cyclist.
Sierra Trading Post Coupon - 10% Off $110+ Orders

Big coupon this month, at Sierra Trading Post, click thought any of the link in this post and it will apply automatically at checkout (until expiration on 3/8/2007). The coupon takes 10% off any order of $110 or more. Good on all the discontinued end-of-year camping, hiking, ski, and backpacking gear at SierraTradingPost.
Coupon: $20 off $100+ Orders at Eastbay.com
![]()
Eastbay has another great deal on workout gear, trail running shoes, and sporting goods. The coupon is good for $20 off all orders of $100 and up. Some items are excluded - like Nike Shox shoes and some Under Armour gear - who knows how far that would get you on the trail though. Enter coupon code LKS17FB2 at checkout (coupon expires March 3, 2007).
62% Off Cloudveil Rayzor Softshell Jacket - Just $103.96
Water resistant and ultra-breathable Cloudveil’s Rayzor softshell jacket is built for an active winter. The stretch-woven Schoeller fabric is still the best of the pack for keeping you dry and sweat-free while stopping wind and cold. Top-of-the-line features include an adjustable fleece-lined collar, handwarmer & sleeve pockets, and touchfasten cuffs. Regularly $275, if you’re lucky enough to be a size small or x-small it’s only $103.96 at Sierra Trading Post.
The women’s version of the Cloudveil Rayzor jacket has the same great Schoeller softshell fabric and all the same features. It’s a bit more expensive, but is available in all sizes x-small through large for just $169.95, also from Sierra Trading Post.
$113 - Patagonia Specter Pullover Waterproof Jacket
6.5 ounces. The Patagonia Specter pullover shell is one of the lightest fully waterproof/breathable jackets on the market.
The Specter jacket is also one of the most breathable jackets on the market because it’s made from Patagonia’s H2No Storm membrane and with stitch-free, “welded” seams that don’t require any non-breathable seam tape. Great features include waterproof-coated zippers, helmet-compatible hood, and a zipper offset at the chin. The one big negative is the half zipper - making the jacket an ultralight but somewhat inconvenient pullover.
