A big, fat 20% off coupon for any full-price item at REI is in my Saturday LA Times today. No need to run out and try to track one down though, the 20% off coupon is part of REIs anniversary sale and is good on orders placed by mail and phone too. The men’s SmartWool Swoop t-shirt works to maintain a constant temperature for your body whether it’s hot or cold outside. It wicks sweat and dries quickly when it’s hot out and insulates lightly when it’s cold. Marked down from $67.50 to $34.93 it’s a great deal if you run a lot in varied weather or as underwear on long camping trips - wool doesn’ build up oder nearly as quickly as polyester or even cotton. I was in San Francisco two weeks ago and waterproof-breathable trail running & hiking shoes seemed to be popular with the comfort-minded. Though they weren’t quite as popular with the worried about speed, ultra-lightweight gear crowd.

I’ve been surprised by the comfort of my own KEEN casual shoes, so the 5-star rating of these isn’t much of a surprise. Except in 85+° F heat this shirt is great for keeping the sun off or as a lightweight, non-stinky underlayer. Yes, I’ve complained about Capilene’s tendency to get smelly before, but the new “Galdiodor” treatment works a lot better - even though I still think Marmot’s DriClime & Terramar’s EC2 are a bit better and any brand of merino wool long underwear has all the synthetics beat.

The other day a friend who I’d always thought of as a deal-seeker told me they probably wouldn’t bother with any sale for 10% or less off. I don’t know if that’s really the case, since they’ve gone to great lengths in the past to use two 20% off one item per person coupons, but I did think of them when Sierra Trading Post released their April coupon.
Good for 7% off any order of $95 and up. Maybe not enough to motivate new visitors to buy, but their already low prices on new, brand name gear keep me going back - and I sure won’t turn down an extra 7% off if I’m already planning to buy.

No free shipping deals, but the coupon applies to bikes and frames too. With a decent selection of 2006 in the closeout section this extra 10% off could make for a few good bargains. Also, the Travel Trac I-Force trainer that I loved so much this winter is now 30% off in Performance’s winter clearance sale and with this extra 10% off coupon will be just $206.99 - not bad for one of the best trainers I’ve ever tried.

It’s not sold specifically as a softshell, but the Castelli Tristan jacket is an athletic-cut, WindStopper membrane jacket with no insulation and breathable fleece panels under the arms. I have an older model that’s become my go-to shell for active winter sports or cold-weather training. The trim cut is great for running or cross country skiing and the breathability and lack of lofty insulation is awesome when trudging uphill with snowshoes or skins on. Likewise, the lack of insulation makes it easy to slip a don parka over this softshell when you stop for a lunch & catch-your-breath break. Even better, this year’s Tristan jacket’s sleeves zip off, leaving you with a wind-proof, water-resistant vest for spring outings.

6.5 ounces. The Patagonia Specter pullover shell is one of the lightest fully waterproof/breathable jackets on the market.
The Specter jacket is also one of the most breathable jackets on the market because it’s made from Patagonia’s H2No Storm membrane and with stitch-free, “welded” seams that don’t require any non-breathable seam tape. Great features include waterproof-coated zippers, helmet-compatible hood, and a zipper offset at the chin. The one big negative is the half zipper - making the jacket an ultralight but somewhat inconvenient pullover.
