Bridgedale Wool & Synthetic Hiking Socks on Sale at Altrec
Bridgedale is an sock company from Ireland that has really pushed the used of multiple weaves and mixed wool/synthetic yarns in socks. Most of their hiking and trail socks have thicker, softer pads under the foot and around the heel to cushion and stop rubbing in your boots, and they have thin, tough knits over bones and joints to help stop pressure-spots. The mix of wools and synthetic fibers in their yarns also balance between the wicking and absorption of wool and the evaporating softneww of synthetics.

A big, fat 20% off coupon for any full-price item at REI is in my Saturday LA Times today. No need to run out and try to track one down though, the 20% off coupon is part of REIs anniversary sale and is good on orders placed by mail and phone too. Just mention coupon code ANNV7 at phone checkout or enter it into the coupon code box online and it will apply to the highest-priced camp, hike, or sports gear in your cart - with some exclusions, see small print paraphrased below.

Altrec Anniversary Sale - Starts This Weekend
Altrec’s 8th anniversary sale started today and they’ve sent a huge amount of outdoor gear to the sale section. Advertisements on their site and the web say “up to 60% off” but most items are 20-30% off. The sale is still worth visiting though, since the selection of items on sale is huge and 20-30% off isn’t a thing to turn your nose up at. Items on sale incluse Osprey and Arc’teryx backpacks, Merrll and Vasque boots, jackets & fleece from The North Face and Patagonia, and even getting-ready-for summer surf trunks and bikinis.
Despite the sale Altrec is keeping their offer of free shipping on orders of $45+, plus no sales tax if your outside of Oregon (or inside, since that state doesn’t have sales tax).

I was in San Francisco two weeks ago and waterproof-breathable trail running & hiking shoes seemed to be popular with the comfort-minded. Though they weren’t quite as popular with the worried about speed, ultra-lightweight gear crowd.

It took a lot of convincing to get me to try my first pair of Superfeet insoles. I managed a department at an outdoor gear store, but refused to spend $20 on a pair (only $20 because prices have gone up in the past decade and because we got a good discount as store employees). I ended up getting a free pair from the Superfeet sales rep. and soon started recommending them to store shoppers. Now I’m recommending them to readers here too (or, if you’re already a Superfeet user just jump to the bottom for the coupon code). Grab the low profile, blue Superfeet insoles to add stability and comfort to athletic shoes and snug fitting hiking boots. Just remember that the ridged, plastic heelcup (on the bottom, not against the foot) can rub against Gore-tex linings and eventually wear holes in them - and that this version of Superfeet have a slightly lower arch support and don’t need much break in.
The high profile, green Superfeet insoles are great for adding stability and reducing slipping in roomy hiking and mountaineering boots. They also require a good amount of break-in because the thicker arch foam needs to mold to your foot - which also means that they’re the more comfortable version as long as there’s enough room in your footwear for both your foot and these green Superfeet insoles.
