I have two of the older versions of these stoves (the oldest has a melted, plastic piezo igniter – a problem solved on all newer, metal models) and they’re low maintenance and easy-lighting compared to most liquid fuel stoves. The only drawbacks are at high-temperature and altitude (over 10,000 ft) where the pressurized gas doesn’t burn for very long and that the stove on top of the gas canister isn’t as stable as shorter stoves that sit right onthe ground. So why are these water bottles, normally $8+, far better than sliced bread when you’re camping? Even at this sale price of $5.49?

It’s not just because the loop top makes for easy carrying and the lexan material can stand ridiculous abuse without breaking (I have broken a couple of these though, one when it fell 90 feet on to a hard sandstone landing, while climbing. Another broke when it had frozen overnight and I tossed it only 10 feet, to a sunny spot so it could melt while I cooked – apparently ice and extreme cold aren’t friendly to lexan). The real reason you just HAVE to carry at least one wide-mouth Nalgene bottle on any camping trip is because every water bottle on the market seems to have a slightly different-sized opening, but Nalgene’s is the standard that all other cooking and water equipment attaches to.

For example, most water filters either screw directly to the top of a wide-mouth Nalgene, like the MSR ceramic water filters, or they have a cheap (as in less than $5) adapter that fits onto the top, like the Katadyn Guide water filter that my wife and I own two of (pre-marriage camping gear, I may write Hiker Deals but I’m not that much of a gearhead to keep a spare water filter). Also, some cooking accessories are sized just for the wide-mouth Nalgene bottles too, like the Press-Bot coffee press.

The other day a friend who I’d always thought of as a deal-seeker told me they probably wouldn’t bother with any sale for 10% or less off. I don’t know if that’s really the case, since they’ve gone to great lengths in the past to use two 20% off one item per person coupons, but I did think of them when Sierra Trading Post released their April coupon.

Good for 7% off any order of $95 and up. Maybe not enough to motivate new visitors to buy, but their already low prices on new, brand name gear keep me going back – and I sure won’t turn down an extra 7% off if I’m already planning to buy.

Brew either coffee or tea in a 32-ounce widemouth Nalgene bottle by pouring hot water over the grounds or leaves and then inserting the folded Press -Bot into the top of the bottle. The only tricky part then is pushing the lock ring down to flatten the screen into place (I’d recommend not filling the bottle all the way unless you want to dip the tips of your fingers in for a hot bath). Let the whole thing sit for a few minutes and then slowly press the screen down. Enjoy!

Try that one sometime, it never burns the dough and won’t melt the plastic bag as long as there’s enough water that the bag doesn’t rest on the bottom of the pot – and don’t seal the top of the bag or steam will pop it open & keep the open top of the bag out of the water unless you want to make dough soup.

Then, if you really feel like showing off it looks even easier to boil water in a plastic bottle. Watch out for splashing hot water on your mitts though. Anyone who can go try this in the backyard firepit or who doesn’t mind possibly getting a bit of plastic in their grill please leave a comment below:

Orange Cinnamon Buns:
The orange cinnamon bun recipie cooks cinnamon roll dough that’s stuffed inside scooped-out orange peels that are wrapped in foil and buried in hot coals. Scooping out the oranges probably takes a bit longer than most of you camp-cooks want to spend prepping, but the peels will stop any burning or drying of the dough and let you just leave the rolls deep in the embers instead of constantly turning and moving them out of the hotspots.

Unfortunately, the cinnamon dough recipie uses milk, so unless you’re lucky enough to be camping outside an RV with a powered ‘fridge replace both the 10 tablespoons of milk and 10 tablespoons of brown sugar with 2/3 cup (about 5 1/2 liquid ounces) of canned condensed milk and an extra half-teaspoon of cinnamon. Even farther in the backcountry or just don’t feel like carrying canned milk? If you’re backpacking, or somewhere hot enough that a tube of biscuit dough won’t even last inside a cooler, try the rewrite of the recipie below for backpacking-friendly orange cinnamon buns, no oranges required:

Backpacking-style Orange Cinnamon Buns Recipie

Mix the following dry ingredients in a gallon-size, zip-lock bag before leaving on the trip (hint, label the bag “Cinnamon Buns” and stick a print-out of the recipie instructions inside it):

• 2 cups flour
• 1/2 cup sugar, white or brown (Stick with white sugar if it’s going to be hot, because brown sugar can get stucky and clump things up.)
• 4 Tablesp. dry powdered milk
• 2 tsp. cinnamon
• 1/2 tsp. baking soda
• 1/3 tsp. baking powder
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 1/4 cup walnuts or pecans (optional)

Bring the following ingredients along, each packed separately:

• 2/3 cup warm water (cold water can keep the dough from rising completely, so this means air-temp water during hot summers and half-boiling/half-cold water when it’s getting cold at night)
• 1/4 cup canola or vegetable oil (olive and corn oil can be too strong tasing)
• 1/2 tsp. dried orange peel (in the spice aisle)

Cooking Instructions: Mix the water and dried orange peel together first. If it’s colder than 80 degrees out or the water is cold heat it a bit in a pan – cold water keeps the baking soda and powder from working right and can cause the buns to be really dense. The first step also softens up the peel and keeps you from having hard bits in the buns. Feel free to add the peel directly to the dry ingredients bag and skip this step altogether if you’re rushed or happier with the faster, easier school of camp-cooking. Once the water is warm (about body temperature), or if you’ve skipped the earlier step, add all the ingredients together and mix well in the dry ingredient bag.

There are three ways to cooks the buns up, but one involves a “fancy” backpacking oven setup: Personally, I like to mix the dough in a plastic bag, put a twist-tie on loosely, and boil the dough in-bag until it’s done (Dough-in-bag Musts: Use the biggest pot you can find and enough water that the dough bag can almost float, plus use a heavy freezer bag & heat spreader under the pot. Plastic won’t melt in boiling water, but it will if it sits on a bottom-of-the-pan hotspot for several seconds.). The second method is to use of a “backpacking oven” system – you’ll know what I’m talking about if you have one – and bake the whole batch of dough as a single loaf. Finally, the classic backpacking method is to pour a portion of the dough into an oiled skillet and cook pancakes instead of buns or biscuits.

Makes enough for 2 very hungry hikers, or 4-5 campers if it’s not the only thing on the menu.

Nacho-style S’mores:
Cooking s’mores up nacho-style in ingenious. Cooking them in an open skillet cuts down on prep-time, mess, burnt fingers, and serving-size fights (you know: “How come he got the bigger piece?!?”). Plus, it’s a lot faster than roasting marshmallows when the only open flame allowed is from a backpacking stove.

Instead of carrying a cast iron skillet on hikes or backpacking trips you can use any matching skillet and lid from your cook kit and a backpacking stove instead of an open fire. When using one of these lighter steel or aluminum skillets, line the inside-bottom with foil – both to keep the graham crackers on the bottom from over-toasting and to save yourself from scraping off the sticky, gooey, sugary mess in the dark. Place the ingredients in the skillet as-described and top with the lid.

When cooking with a lighter skillet keep the backpacking stove on low, and/or use a heat spreader plate, and/or constantly move the skillet around just above the flames (so no one spot in the skillet heats up completely). Just a few minutes should get everything toasted and melted together.

Instead of pages of opinion from multiple reviewers and charts of comparison data, Mountain Gazette found that all the stoves are very similar in capability and no one stove is set apart from the others. This Coleman hanging table is a great idea for car camping or any comfortable base camp. The table and several gear hooks (for water bags, lanterns, or even backpacks) all hang from a strap that tightens around the trunk of a tree. Since it’s all tied to a tree there’s no worry about finding flat ground or about things sitting around in puddles – of course, if you live in SoCal like I do you might worry about finding a tall enough tree if you’re camping in the desert or a beach area. Not to mention that this coleman table is a lot smaller and lighter than you’re average folding table – I’ll use that extra space to carry more food, gear, and even more food.

One warning about using the gear hooks from this Coleman table setup to protect your food from bears and other animals: Hanging you backpack or food bag against the trunk of a tree with food in it won’t keep the squirrels out, plus even Yao Ming probably isn’t tall enough to get the strap up & out of a bear’s reach. Make sure your pack, food bag, or “bear container” hangs in mid-air (2-3 feet from branches above, below, and to the side) to keep the smaller critters out of it. The best backpacking meals are always the ones that don’t require much prepping or cooking. I remember that each and every breakfast in the backcountry: it’s cold, I’m hungry, and the only choices are granola bars or fumbling with mixes, ingredients (which I normally spill half of), and waiting for cooking. Here’s one of the best ideas I’ve heard in a long time:

I’d love hot pancakes when camping, but mixing batter in a small envelope and cleaning up later don’t make it easy in the morning. And, no one in their right mind would try to carry pre-made pancakes and think they wouldn’t be just crumbs after half a day on the trail. Backpacker magazine has the answer, with a recipie for carryable crepes. Crepes are more like tortillas than pancakes, and tortillas sure seem to handle getting stuffed in a backpack OK. Plus, the crepes can just be popped out of the Ziplock and heated in a skillet until they’re hot (or eaten cold if that’s your thing), and that has got to be faster than heating water for oatmeal and then having to clean up later.

They don’t say what makes it Sweedish, but since the “Swedish” firesteel is just $15.99 it’s going to be fun to play with.

The Review:
I think the worst thing about a lot of protein bars is the after-taste. Not only do the Clif Builders have no funny or chalky taste – they’re like some of the better granola bars I’ve ever tried. Without being overly sweet the bars are very close to the taste of Kudos-brand bars. In chocolate, cookies n’ cream, and peanut butter – the chocolate and peanut butter are both good. I’m a peanut butter fan, so the peanut butter flavor is my favorite – so much so that I would take it on hikes instead of a regular Clif bar if it wouldn’t melt. The chocolate flavor doesn’t have a downside either, it’s subtly cocoa flavored and not bitter or waxy. I haven’t seen the cookies n’ cream in my store, but I can’t imagine they’re bad the way the other two flavors taste.

A big part of the taste of any bar is the texture. Personally, I can even tolerate the bars that get crushed and flattened out down in the bottom of a pack, but when I’m eating those leftovers I can tell it’s not real food. Texture is probably what makes a lot of people dislike almost any and every brand of bar. Builder bars have a surprisingly good, foodlike texture. The three layer bar is like a cross between candy bars and a lot of chewy granola bars. Without being too sugary or to fat-filled these are just a bit denser than chewy granola bars but the creamy peanut butter or chocolate flavor on top keeps it from feeling too much like a block of grains.

All natural ingredients in Clif bars are a big plus. When it comes to bars, I’m more worried about being able to stomach them with too little water left in the bottle than I am about finding organic or natural ingredients. Once again the Clif bar company has managed to put both good

All-in-all the people over at Clif have come up with one of the best bars I’ve tried yet; it’s definitely going to be my choice for protein bars.
