$40 – Primus Micron Stove on Sale at REI
![]()
Weighing only a few ounces and using pressurized gas canisters, the Primus Micron stove is an ultralight and simple-to-use camp stove. It’s the latest generation of stoves from Primus and weighs only 3.3 ounces, but still boils a liter of water in just 4 minutes. Even better, the burner can be adjusted from very low to very high heat levels easily.
I have two of the older versions of these stoves (the oldest has a melted, plastic piezo igniter – a problem solved on all newer, metal models) and they’re low maintenance and easy-lighting compared to most liquid fuel stoves. The only drawbacks are at high-temperature and altitude (over 10,000 ft) where the pressurized gas doesn’t burn for very long and that the stove on top of the gas canister isn’t as stable as shorter stoves that sit right onthe ground. Grab one of these if you’re an ultralight backpacker or a hiker who doesn’t like having to tweak and toy with the stove.
No direct-linking to REI items, so click and then search for item # 752821. Sale price at the winter clearance sale is 30% off, just $39.83.
REI Holiday Clearance Sale Starts Today

REI Coupon: $20 off $100+ Orders

REI finally joined the long list of gear shops with last-minute holiday discounts. There must be a blot of shoppers holding off on gift purchases when the biggest camping, hiking, outdoors store around is advertising on radio and TV, plus offerring $20 off any purchase of $100 or more.
Use coupon code HOLIDAY7 at REI.com checkout or over the phone to apply the discount. Coupon expires Dec. 24, 2007.
$10 Off Energy Bars at Amazon.com
![]()
We all love to hate these things, but the latest crop of “real food” energy bars from Lara, Pro Bar, and the Clif Nectar bar are halfway between a Fig Newton and a candy bar – and actually taste pretty good when you’re hungry but trying to make camp before dark. Amazon.com also offers $10 off on those and all other tastes of Clif bars, Luna bars, Larabars, Odwalla bars and Probars. To get the $10 off a $39 or more order, just enter coupon code GOODBARS at checkout, free shipping and Amazon Prime still work after the coupon.
Moosejaw Aniversary Coupon: 20% Any One Item
![]()
Moosejaw.com is offering 20% off (almost) any one item in the store. Just enter the coupon code 313 at checkout – hurry, because it’s only good through the end of today, October 21st.
The sale includes all the winter gear, shells, tents, sleeping bags, packs, and climbing equipment you’ve been drooling over but couldn’t quite afford … except for the following slightly long list of brands: Libtech, Gnu, Roxy Hardgoods, Merrell, 32, Yakima, Nixon, Forum, Burton, Anon, Red, Analog, Gravis, Suunto, The North Face, Arcteryx, Bugaboo, Western, and Patagonia (though coupon code 921 gets you 20% off any Patagonia gear). You still score free shipping on all orders of $29+ and no sales tax outside of Illinois and Michigan.
$23.97 – Outdoor Research Backcountry Kitchen Kit
![]()
One of the best reasons I’ve heard for NOT trying fastpacking is that “the food is bad.” Given that fastpackers are known for downing energy bars and dried oatmeal for days, I’d have to say that I can agree with that. If you’re of the same mind take a look at this backcountry kitchen kit by Outdoor Research. It’s a convenient stash of cooking tools, eating utensils, seasoning containers, and the see-through mesh bag that’s worth considering now that it’s 40% off too. Marked down from $40 to $23.97 at Backcountry Outlet.
60% Off Coleman Peak 1 Camp Stove and Xpedition Double-Stove
For just $19.99 the Coleman Peak 1 stove is a beginner’s dream-stove. It has a built in windscreen and burns standard propane gas cylinders (the compact sizes available at any hardware store and most international destinations). It’s not the lightest or most compact stove around but the fuel is easy to find and it both simmers well and boils quickly. Anyway, the truly hardcore probably have a multi-fuel stove that will cook on rum or diesel fuel if needed…
This 2-burner Coleman Exponent Xpedition stove is a dream for a guide, family, or big group camping trip. It’s only 26 ounces for two burners to make sure all parts of a meal get finished on time, plus since they’re attached losing food to tipped pots is almost impossible. The attached stoves are both Coleman’s top-of-the-line models that run on compact Powermax fuel and boil a quart of water in well under 4 minutes. Just $29.99 too, at Sierra Trading Post.
Free shipping link for $75+ orders: Add a few items to the above items and use the September Sierra Trading Post coupon for free shipping on all orders of $75 and up (this link only for coupon), good until October 3rd, 2007. Only these last 2 links apply the coupon and the discount will appear once you shopping cart total is $75 or more.
REI Labor Day Sale and Summer Gear Clearance, Aug 24 – Sept 3
The REI Labor Day sale starts in about an hour. As they make space for skis and snowboards, grab summer camping gear and outdoor clothing at big discounts – looks like most items are 15-25% off. Add in the 10% rebate for REI members and that’s a pretty good deal on current-year camping equipment. Sale lasts until September 3rd.
$1.20 – Texsport Refillable Squeeze Tubes

On one of my first backpacking trips I brought a fork and spoon, but no knife. That oversight wasn’t a big deal though since most of our spreadable foods were packed in refillable squeeze tubes, like these. Peanut butter, honey, even downsizing the sunscreen (in case you were convinced to buy that quart-size “bargain” bottle) are all good uses for these tubes. One caution though, don’t sit on them, just because they’re leak-free doesn’t mean they won’t pop and leave a stinky, bear-attracting mess all over your hiking partner’s pants.
Even better they’re only $1.20 for two at Sierra Trading Post right now.
$10 off $50 at Amazon Groceries
Not exactly camping related, unless you’re ordering oatmeal and granola in bulk, but Amazon.com has an online grocery store that sells non-perishable food at pretty good prices. I’m not sure if I want to get 5 boxes of cereal all at once, but you can get $10 off a $50 order with coupon code MEAL1000 (enter code in the “promo code or gift certificate box at checkout, no mention of when the coupon expires).
Eastern Mountain Sports Coupon: 20% Off 1st Item, 15% Off Next Two
A big coupon for Eastern Mountain Sports right now: get 20% off your most expensive item and 15% off each of the next two. Click any of the links to auto-apply the coupon and the discount will be taken at checkout.
EMS.com is a smaller-than-REI, outdoor gear chain with good service. They have major brands and good self-branded gear for hiking, backpacking, climbing, cycling, and other outdoor sports.
Brands excluded from the discount are Merrell, Patagonia, and Necky. Already on-sale items are also excluded. Coupon expires July 4, 2007.
$9.93 – Buck NRG Pocket Knife
![]()
Less than $10 buys you the Buck NRG pocket knife. This is the weight-saving version of the multi-tools I normally post here. Other than fixing too-complicated, fold-open, cooking equipment that won’t fit in a backpack anyway, a sharp knife blade will get you through most camp chores, emergencies, and even minor medical fixes. This knife is just 1.2 ounces and 2 inches long, but the grooved grip makes it easy to control during chores. It’s on clerance at REI-Outlet.com now, no direct links to items there though so search for item # 760130.
15% Off at Backcountry.com
![]()
Get 15% off Backcountry.com’s hiking, camping, and backpacking gear and clothes for the next day-and-a-half. Use coupon code: 1L3-1-63VLV at checkout (expires 5/30/2007). Sale orders are still eligible for free shipping if they’re $50 or more.
*There are some restrictions on the coupon though, some brands and already-on-sale gear may not be eligible for the extra 15% off.
