My top pick in the clearance today is the Gregory Nano backpack. This pack is part of Gregory’s “All Terrain” series, so despite it’s daypack appearance it has a sturdy harness and light frame for better comfort and load support. With the trim, 1,000 cubic-inch profile it will make a great climber’s or skier’s pack (though you’re going to have to be creative in carrying skis with this thing, not many straps on the outside to attach them to). Even better though is that it will make a great daypack for kids who want to carry some of their own gear, or even a weekend pack for smaller children not yet ready to lug their own sleeping bag and part of the tent.

What does every experienced camper have 10 of, but still needs more? Wide-mouth, lexan Nalgene bottles (no direct-links at REI.com, so search for item #402065 for gray lexan or item #664604 for colors).

So why are these water bottles, normally $8+, far better than sliced bread when you’re camping? Even at this sale price of $5.49?

It’s not just because the loop top makes for easy carrying and the lexan material can stand ridiculous abuse without breaking (I have broken a couple of these though, one when it fell 90 feet on to a hard sandstone landing, while climbing. Another broke when it had frozen overnight and I tossed it only 10 feet, to a sunny spot so it could melt while I cooked – apparently ice and extreme cold aren’t friendly to lexan). The real reason you just HAVE to carry at least one wide-mouth Nalgene bottle on any camping trip is because every water bottle on the market seems to have a slightly different-sized opening, but Nalgene’s is the standard that all other cooking and water equipment attaches to.

For example, most water filters either screw directly to the top of a wide-mouth Nalgene, like the MSR ceramic water filters, or they have a cheap (as in less than $5) adapter that fits onto the top, like the Katadyn Guide water filter that my wife and I own two of (pre-marriage camping gear, I may write Hiker Deals but I’m not that much of a gearhead to keep a spare water filter). Also, some cooking accessories are sized just for the wide-mouth Nalgene bottles too, like the Press-Bot coffee press.

Since you need them anyway, scoop up a few of these wide-mouth Nalgene bottles while they’re just $5.49. And since there aren’t direct-links to REI.com products allowed, search for item #402065 for gray lexan or item #664604 for colors.

It took a lot of convincing to get me to try my first pair of Superfeet insoles. I managed a department at an outdoor gear store, but refused to spend $20 on a pair (only $20 because prices have gone up in the past decade and because we got a good discount as store employees). Just remember that the ridged, plastic heelcup (on the bottom, not against the foot) can rub against Gore-tex linings and eventually wear holes in them – and that this version of Superfeet have a slightly lower arch support and don’t need much break in.

The high profile, green Superfeet insoles are great for adding stability and reducing slipping in roomy hiking and mountaineering boots. They also require a good amount of break-in because the thicker arch foam needs to mold to your foot – which also means that they’re the more comfortable version as long as there’s enough room in your footwear for both your foot and these green Superfeet insoles.

The other day a friend who I’d always thought of as a deal-seeker told me they probably wouldn’t bother with any sale for 10% or less off. Half-Off Victorinox Swiss Army Knives and Multitool

Always useful when something goes wrong, all Victorinox knives and multitools are 50%, or more, off at Amazon.com this week. Some of my favorite models are the Swiss Huntsman knife with plenty of blades and tools for the outdoors, including a small saw blade, but not any extras to make it bulky or heavy. For a bit more usefullness around the house, the Swiss Deluxe Tinker knife trades in the saw blade & corkscrew for pliers & a philips-head screwdriver. The Swiss Locksmith knife is a large lockback knife that loses the scissors of the Tinker, but gains a lock on the knife blade and an inch in length.

If you spend enough time in the outdoors though, a multitool like the Swiss Spirit multitool comes in a lot handier than even the most feature-filled knife. That’s because after enough time in the backcountry you’ll need to do repairs on something, like a stove or water filter, and that usually means you either need a set of wrenches or a good set of pliers. Leatherman invented this type of tool, but Victorinox has taken them to the next level with super high-end, stainless steel. Plus, the Swiss Spirit multitool is marked down from $85 to $34.99.

Ignore this one if you’re not a climber: Metolius’ #9 Fat Cam is being cleared out at Backcountry.com. These are 4-cams with wider than normal cams to distribute pressure better and eliminate “tracking” in soft rock. they still hold equally well in hard rock, but the #9 is about 3/8-inch wider than a standard cam, so it won’t fit into small pockets as well as a standard 4-cam, much less a 3-cam.

Also, Backcountry.com has a sale this week on climbing shoes from Scarpa and La Sportiva, they’re being cleared out 25-40% off.

Hanging Table and Gear Hooks are a Great Idea (but Keep Using a Bear Bag Too)

This Coleman hanging table is a great idea for car camping or any comfortable base camp. The table and several gear hooks (for water bags, lanterns, or even backpacks) all hang from a strap that tightens around the trunk of a tree. Since it’s all tied to a tree there’s no worry about finding flat ground or about things sitting around in puddles – of course, if you live in SoCal like I do you might worry about finding a tall enough tree if you’re camping in the desert or a beach area. Not to mention that this coleman table is a lot smaller and lighter than you’re average folding table – I’ll use that extra space to carry more food, gear, and even more food.

One warning about using the gear hooks from this Coleman table setup to protect your food from bears and other animals: Hanging you backpack or food bag against the trunk of a tree with food in it won’t keep the squirrels out, plus even Yao Ming probably isn’t tall enough to get the strap up & out of a bear’s reach. Make sure your pack, food bag, or “bear container” hangs in mid-air (2-3 feet from branches above, below, and to the side) to keep the smaller critters out of it. Yes, that plastic or metal canister may be bear-proof, but odds are a squirrel or marmot can find their way inside if they can get to it easily.

GCI Trail Sling Chair = Just Plain Cool

This is just plain cool. About twice as long as a water bottle, this GCI Trail Sling chair looks great for backpacking and weekend camping trips. It’s more real chair than those sleeping-pad-with-straps seats (aka: Crazy Creek chairs – and honestly, leaning against a rock or tree is about the same as using a Crazy Creek), because it gets your butt off wet ground or snow. The sling chair does look a bit like a hammock, but unlike a hammock you can still cook a meal while sitting in it and probably won’t have friends trying to flip you over like in a hammock. The only downside I can think of is that the sling chair won’t do double-duty as a sleeping pad, but at $14.38 for the Trail sling chair you can afford a sleeping pad too.

For that matter, skip any harness without adjustable leg loops for winter climbing. While you’re being picky about winter harnesses, try to find one with pressure molded padding. Harnesses with molded padding soak up less water and stay lighter during drippy, damp winter trips.

Hopping around Europe on the Eurail trains (aka: EuroRail) is a blast. Those trains are fast, convenient, and clean – which makes an overnight train a great and cheap place to sleep between countries. The biggest problem with sleeping on the train is “slash and dash” theft. Because most students riding Eurail trains are carrying nylon backpacks it’s easy to slice them open with a knife and grab whatever is lose.

REI.com is having its annual 4th of July sale now. With 20-40% off boots, clothes, and packs it’s worth checking out the sale items to see if it’s something you’ve been waiting to buy.

The only tent on sale is a half-fly, Sierra Designs Sirius 3. Don’t bother with it unless you’re in a near-tropical climate. The half-fly is meant to save weight, but it sacrifices a lot in rain and wind protection without saving any weight compared to better designed tents from Marmot, REI and even Sierra Designs themselves. The only reason to spring for the tent would be if you do a lot of camping in near-tropical conditions. Because the half fly allows tons of airflow and covers a completely mesh tent-half, heat probably never builds up inside.

An item worth checking out from the sale list is the Osprey Crescent 90 Pack (search for item 699377, no direct links with REI). Billing it as “unisex” may have given it a bad reputation – which is all wrong. Osprey uses separate hipbelts, so the part of the pack that matters is male/female-specific, plus their hipbelts come in wide size ranges and can be switched between pack bodies. This 90 liter pack is a great size for week-long winter trips, month-long summer trips, or trad climbers on a weekend trip with a long hike-in.
