Super-simple Kodak Digital Camera for Only $69.99

It’s been hard to share pictures with my family, since none of us live in the same state anymore and not everyone has gone digital yet. I finally managed to convince my Mom to send her film to Shutterfly.com, because they scan the developed film and put the pictures online to share with the rest of the family.

Now it’s time to get her a digital camera so she can email or upload to Shutterfly instantly. Of course, it’s taken a while to find a camera with both a simple interface and both good zoom and picture quality. I finally tested Kodak’s CX-series of cameras, and found they had good quality and a simple menu system. They’ve been hard to find a deal or sale on, until now:

Computer Geeks has the Kodak CX7310 on sale for just $69.99. With a Kodak lens and 5x zoom Mom will be able to get the shot she wants. Plus, the 3.2 megapixel The camera has a software and slight lens upgrade from the CX7300, click for review dpreview.com.

Shutterfly has almost completely replaced my inkjet printer. Except for big prints where their prices are still expensive I have just about everything printed there. No smearing or streaking and I don’t have to deal with empty ink cartridges.

Anyway, they have a free shipping sale on orders over $15. Plus, they’re offering 15 free 4×6 prints for new members (expires July 20th).

Backpacker Magazine: Good Photo Tips for Digital & Film Cameras at Backpacker.com

My rating: 5 out of 5

The Backpacker.com website has a really bad search engine, so I finally broke down and paid for the real Backpacker Magazine.

At first I thought the $20/year might have been wasted, but I’m happy to have the magazine now. Searching for specific article titles from the magazine at Backpacker.com not only shows the articles online, but brings up whole sections of the website that aren’t on the website menus. A great example is this digital photography section, with half the photo tips being helpful for film cameras too.

The “Digital 101″ article applies to both digital and film camers. The idea is pretty simple: “practice until you know your camera’s settings”. Personally, I don’t like the idea of speding a lot of time staging a scene to take shots, but I have to admit I’ve missed some good pictures because things didn’t show up how I expected them to. After all those missed shots. After that article I might actually dig out my “camping camera” and figure out the right settings for sunset, shady forest, and sunrise pictures.

I’m giving Backpacker Magazine 5 of 5 stars. If this was a review of the Backpacker.com website then I would only give 3 of 5 stars.

Off Topic: Cheap Ink Cartridges & Free Shipping

I apologize that this isn’t hiking, backpacking, or even outdoor related.

Anyway, if anyone hasn’t already found a generic cartridge shop they like, or if you’re distrustful because of all the “cheap ink” spam you get: I just had a good experience with a shop called Ink4Art.com. They have a coupon for free 2-day shipping if you get a multi-pack. Plus, my order, which just arrived, actually made it in 2 days and the right cartriges are in there. The cartidges were about $10 each instead of the $25-30 I think I pay at retail prices.

Here’s the coupon: FREE 2-Day Shipping on all inkjet orders over $40. Use coupon code: XPRESS (Contiguous 48 States Only)

Free McAfee Internet Security 2005 Software

I wouldn’t normally post software on a hiking and backpacking website, but it is a website, so most of the people visiting could probably use this free McAfee Security 2005 software (mail-in rebate required to make it free).

Oakley Thump Sunglasses – What?, Why? and Free Shipping

I’m generally a gadget person, but I don’t exactly understand the draw behind the Oakley Thump sunglasses and their built-in MP3 player. Yes they’re expensive and that says a lot about the guys wearing them. FYI: They don’t seem to fit smaller women’s faces very well, according to online reviews . Unless you’re a lifeguard, landscaper, or a roofer (no putdowns at all, I’ve worked all 3 of those jobs) I can’t imagine wearing sunglasses enough to make these worthwhile, after all the Thumps aren’t exactly sleek enough to pull off wearing them indoors.

Personally, I’ll stick with an iPod Shuffle for $99-149, but if you’re looking for your 3rd digital music player or can’t get enough of Oakley’s goods here’s a place that has them in stock and offers free shipping:

Wireless iPod Remote 25% off, only $44.95

This may be a site for hiking and camping deals, but since we spend a lot of time in our cars, especially when driving to wherever we’re going each weekend, we’re addicted to our iPods. This wireless iPod remote makes controlling music on the iPod easier and safer in the car. Plus, with a range of 150 ft, it makes it easy to control when you’re too sore & tired to walk into the next room. Even better, this FM iPod transmitter lets you stream music through the radio and at $19 it’s a lot cheaper than an in-car iPod dock.

GPS Units on Sale, Waterproof & Ruggedized

Toys! Just a few years back a GPS unit was as fragile as glass and as expensive as a laptop – now they’re armored, sealed and on sale for less than $100.

Even cooler, using the free software found here, you can turn the GPS coordinates saved in these devices into satellite trail maps with Google Maps.
