REI Coupon: 20% Off One Item, May 4-13th
![]()
A big, fat 20% off coupon for any full-price item at REI is in my Saturday LA Times today. No need to run out and try to track one down though, the 20% off coupon is part of REIs anniversary sale and is good on orders placed by mail and phone too. Just mention coupon code ANNV7 at phone checkout or enter it into the coupon code box online and it will apply to the highest-priced camp, hike, or sports gear in your cart - with some exclusions, see small print paraphrased below.
Of course, the coupon’s small print:
Offer isn’t valid on sale items. REI membership required, but you can join for $15 at checkout. Also not valid on special orders, packages, prior purchases, gif cards, services, rentals, bikes, boats, GPS’s, radios, or locator beacons (for once, ski and snowboard gear appears to be eligible - of course, it’s probably on closeout sale already and thus not eligible as a sale item). Merchandise must be in-stock and purchases with this coupon aren’t eligible for the REI member refund.

Thump on the Head - Oakley Thump Sunglasses Just $134.53
The crazy-looking, but somehow still cooler than I can understand, Oakley THUMP sunglasses have been marked down to $134.53 at Backcountry.com. Just click through that link or this one and add it to your cart to get the discount.
$134.53 is 55% off the THUMP’s regular $300 price (and about the same price as the 1GB iPod Nano which, unfortuantely, you can’t really see through when you put it over your eyes). Combined with free shipping this is the cheapest price I’ve seen on these glasses.

Dell Coupon, $15 Off Any Order of $150 or More
The Dell web store emailed me a coupon code that I’m not going to use. They had a great price on a digital camera a few months back, but I don’t need any new toys now. If you’re in the market though use coupon code Z3KB??ZMW1WHD6 to get $15 off any digital camer, software, or computer purchase of $150 or more (expires June 28th, 2006, at 11pm Central Time).

$10.99 - Memorex 50-pack AA Alkaline Batteries
![]()
What a Memorial Day, I headed out the the gas grill today and the auto-ignition switch didn’t work. Turns out that the grill igniter needs an AA battery to make it spark. …even grills need batteries now!
I picked up a few batteries from the grocery store, but for a few dollars more ($10.99 total) I also ordered a 50-pack of AA Alkaline Batteries from Amazon. Grab several packs or something else you’ve been wanting to get the order over $25 and shipping is free too.

Just in Case: iPod Battery Replacement Info
A few friends who are heavy users of the iPod have seen their battery life drop to near-nothing and have iPods that will turn off in mid-song. Most of them are still in classes or doing lab work and listen all day. I work too much to kill burn through the iPod’s battery …but this looks like a great site to keep handy for info on iPod battery replacments and general warranty contact numbers.
Also, older Apple iPods had some defective batteries, so check your model number and file at this legal settlement site by Sept. 30th for a coupon or refund from Apple.
iPod nano: Light Enough to Backpack With, but Should You?
The new iPod nano is about the size and weight of a dozen business cards. Anything that small qualifies as carryable on even the longest backpacking trips. Nonetheless, should you try to carry one with you?
I could get in to various reasons to enjoy the peace and quiet, and compare that with the nano is keeping some people more peaceful and quiet than without it. The problem is that the battery won’t last long enough in the backcountry to do you or anyone much good. And, if you’re so worried about someone not enjoying the peace and quiet - then maybe you should just enjoy the same and not worry about what other people are doing. The battery will die soon enough anyway.
For more deatils that I’m not qualified to give check Engadget’s summary review of nano “first looks”. They avoided gushing too much, though they’ll probably do that once they can actually get a nano. By the way, if you really like techie toys, then Engadget is a must-read.
Update: An excellent review of the nano from Ars Technica (and they take it apart when they’re done!)
