55% Off – The North Face Men’s Prism Optimus Down Jacket
![]()
The Prism Opimus down jacket is a big step up from the hackneyed Nuptse down jacket. As a Summit series jacket from The North Face, it’s filled with both 700-fill down and a “backup” layer of Primaloft synthetic insulation that’s laminated to the shell instead of being compressed by stitching. This North Face jacket also features reinforced cuffs and a water resistant PU coating, but weighs only 1.5 pounds.
It’s on sale for $149.50, but use the coupon code SUPERSALE at checkout for an extra 10% off. Moosejaw also delivers free shipping on all orders of $29 or more, no sales tax on orders shipping outside of Illinois or Michigan, and 10% of the purchase price back in “Moosejaw points” that be used like cash at (where else …) Moosejaw.

$59 – Mountain Hardware Huckster Backpack
![]()
When I managed at a gear store my friend and I spent days looking for a good ski-carrying pack to put next to the rows of snowboarding packs. We didn’t have great luck, but it turned out OK because we were in Chicago and the whole snowboarding thing was overhyped for a place where 400 feet is a lot of vertical.
Too bad the Huckster ski-carrying pack from Mountain Hardware wasn’t around then. This pack is a low-profile daypack most of the year, and a backcountry skiing monster during the winter. Skis can be carried a-frame or diagonally and the aluminum stay and rigid strapdown panel guarantee the skis will stay put comfortably and the pack (& your back) won’t end up wrapped around them. Also has a hydration bladder sleeve, insulated hydration hose, and a big loading panel.
The pack also ships for free and has no sales tax if you ship it outside of Washington state, at Altrec.com.
Men’s Asolo FSN 95 Gore-Tex Hiking Boots, 50% Off
A few smaller sizes of the men’s Asolo FSN 95 hiking boots are still available, all under size 10 at Sierra Trading Post. Just like the comparable women’s FSN 70 boots these are waterproofed with GoreTex and won “Best Backpacking Boot” from Backpacker Magazine.
Coupon for orders $88+: These boots are only $77.50, but add another item or two and you can use the August coupon for 8% off all orders of $88+, valid until September 5th, 2007. Only this last link applies the coupon and the discount will appear once you shopping cart total is $88 or more.
$74.97 – Asolo FSN 70 Women’s, Gore-Tex Hiking Boots

Asolo’s FSN 70, women’s hiking boots won “Best Backpacking Boot” from Backpacker Magazine for their combination of rugedness, light weight, and comfort. They weigh only two pounds, but at only $74.97 there will be a bit of cash left to weigh down your wallet.
Coupon for bigger orders: The August coupon is out and is good for 8% off all orders of $88+, valid until September 5th, 2007. Only this last link applies the coupon and the discount will appear once you shopping cart total is $88 or more.

$62.50 – Helly Hansen Women’s Airrush Waterproof Jacket

Another great women’s jacket, this one is the Airrush waterproof, breathable from Helly Hansen. I like the look of the external seam-tape, although my wife thinks it’s too “guy-looking” and would be cuter in a color other than black… She does like that despite the light weight (1 pound, 6 ounce) they lined the collar with fleece and made sure to put real, reachable handwarmer pockets on this shell. As usual, I’m cheap so I like that it’s only $62.50 at Sierra Trading Post.
Plus, if you’re going to pick up a bit more gear, use this link for 8% off $88+ orders via electronic coupon. You’ll need to search for “airrush” since that link lands on the home page, but the coupon will be applied to your cart once your order is $88 or more.
$67.50 – Womanticore Softshell Jacket from Mountain Hardware, 75% Off

The Mountain Hardware Womanticore jacket is a hybrid softshell with waterproof, breathable shoulders and body and stretchy, breathable underarm and side panels. It’s a great mix that makes a waterproof, breathable shell more comfortable. Even better is the $67.50 price at Sierra Trading Post.
Also, if you’re going to pick up a bit more gear, use this link for 8% off $88+ orders via electronic coupon. You’ll need to search for “womanticore” since it lands on the home page, but the coupon will be applied to your cart once your order is $88 or more.
Clearance on Bridgedale Ascent CoolMax Hiking Socks, $4.48

Made from 48% CoolMax and 27% merino wool, the Bridgedale Ascent socks are 3-season hiking and backpacking socks with dense padding underfoot and a trim fit that reduces loose areas of the sock and blisters. They’re also 75% off at Sierra Trading Post, and just $4.48 a pair. Currently the Ascent socks are available in XS, S, M, and L sizes.
If you’re going to spend at least $88 at Sierra Trading Post then use this link
to apply the 8% off $88 electronic coupon and search for “ascent”.
Osprey Backpack Rain Covers, 50% Off
![]()
Ever been backpacking in the rain?
So has just about anyone with more than a few days of trails under our boots. I used to prefer using a garbage bag with a cutout for the straps and hipbelt and some duct tape to reinforce it and keep it from being baggy, but that was until someone gifted me a packcover. The garbage bag packcover still works if needed, but the fabric packcover doesn’t snag & tear on every last branch along the trail (nor make me glance back all the time so I can collect any snagged bits of plastic that might hang around forever), it’s much quieter, and it’s about the same weight as the garbage bag version.
Normally packcovers are almost as expensive as a small daypack, but the small and large Osprey rain covers are marked down from $34 to $12.98 for the small and $16.98 for the large. Mountain Gear doesn’t do direct-links, so go there and search for “raincover”, the sale ones are blue-gray in the picture and have a red sale price below them.

To get it in the stores, find a copy of the friends and family email and print it out (I’ll post one here as soon as I can find a scanner). Discount only good August 3rd – 5th.
43% Off Pearl Izumi Shine Trail Runners
![]()
Pearl Izumi’s Shine runing shoes are a big 42% off at Backcountry.com now. Pearl Izumi is realtively new to the shoe business, but their workout clothes have had a great reputation for decades. Now I’m hearing good things about their shoes too. These Shines have a seamless inner liner to prevent blisters, are lightweight for being a trail shoe, and have a wider-than-average fit.
The shoes are currently just $52 at Backcountry.com, plus free shipping and no sales tax outside of Utah. Available in larger sizes, currently 11-13.
