  • $9.93 - Buck NRG Pocket Knife

Buck NRG Pocket Knife on saleLess than $10 buys you the Buck NRG pocket knife. This is the weight-saving version of the multi-tools I normally post here. Other than fixing too-complicated, fold-open, cooking equipment that won’t fit in a backpack anyway, a sharp knife blade will get you through most camp chores, emergencies, and even minor medical fixes. This knife is just 1.2 ounces and 2 inches long, but the grooved grip makes it easy to control during chores. It’s on clerance at REI-Outlet.com now, no direct links to items there though so search for item # 760130.

    $120 - Patagonia Women’s Down Vest

Patagonia Womens Down Sweater Vest sale clearanceI never used to like it when gear manufacturers called their lightweight down jackets and vests “sweaters”. After all, they were really just less-warm versions of their normal down jackets, but were still too bulky to wear comfortably under a waterproof shell … but that was until Patagonia introduced their down sweaters and vests which are all super trim, extra light, and with enough 800-fill power down to still be really warm. They’re stylish and comfortable enough that after trying one on my wife almost demanded it as a Christmas gift.

The Patagonia women’s down vest that’s on sale now is one of those great pieces, the same one my wife wanted. It’s filled with 800-fill down, and the close-spaced baffles keep the loft down to just an inch or two. Always sweating the details, Patagonia also added extra stitching under the arms to keep the down to about a half-inch thick and make the vest really trim and comfortable - not to mention the rip-stop shell fabric that keeps the weight down to just 6 ounces. Per the reviews on Altrec.com this sweater vest is a bit shorter and trimmer-fitting than the average down jacket, so women in between sizes or with larger busts should size-up one size.

Currently it’s available in XS, S, M, & L sizes for just $119.99 at Altrec and it includes free shipping, like all backcountry gear orders of $45 and up.

    $29.70 - Gregory Nano Backpack (70% Off!)

Sierra Trading Post is having a BarnBurner sale this weekend. All items on sale are discounted at least 50% for just 1-2 days at a time, with new items getting added each day.

My top pick in the clearance today is the Gregory Nano backpack. This pack is part of Gregory’s “All Terrain” series, so despite it’s daypack appearance it has a sturdy harness and light frame for better comfort and load support. With the trim, 1,000 cubic-inch profile it will make a great climber’s or skier’s pack (though you’re going to have to be creative in carrying skis with this thing, not many straps on the outside to attach them to). Even better though is that it will make a great daypack for kids who want to carry some of their own gear, or even a weekend pack for smaller children not yet ready to lug their own sleeping bag and part of the tent.

Making the pack even better is the $29.70 price, it’s normally $99. Also if you’re in a gear shopping mood and want to add a few more items to your order this link is the: Sierra Trading Post free shipping on $100+ coupon, coupon applied to cart when total is over $100 (NOTE: only this link in the message is a coupon and it doesn’t link straight to the Nano pack, so you’ll have to use this link & then search for “nano” if you want the coupon and the pack).

    $5.49 - Wide-Mouth, Lexan Nalgene Bottles

wide-mouth lexan Nalgene 32oz bottle on sale at REIWhat does every experienced camper have 10 of, but still needs more? Wide-mouth, lexan Nalgene bottles (no direct-links at REI.com, so search for item #402065 for gray lexan or item #664604 for colors).

So why are these water bottles, normally $8+, far better than sliced bread when you’re camping? Even at this sale price of $5.49?

It’s not just because the loop top makes for easy carrying and the lexan material can stand ridiculous abuse without breaking (I have broken a couple of these though, one when it fell 90 feet on to a hard sandstone landing, while climbing. Another broke when it had frozen overnight and I tossed it only 10 feet, to a sunny spot so it could melt while I cooked - apparently ice and extreme cold aren’t friendly to lexan). The real reason you just HAVE to carry at least one wide-mouth Nalgene bottle on any camping trip is because every water bottle on the market seems to have a slightly different-sized opening, but Nalgene’s is the standard that all other cooking and water equipment attaches to.

For example, most water filters either screw directly to the top of a wide-mouth Nalgene, like the MSR ceramic water filters, or they have a cheap (as in less than $5) adapter that fits onto the top, like the Katadyn Guide water filter that my wife and I own two of (pre-marriage camping gear, I may write Hiker Deals but I’m not that much of a gearhead to keep a spare water filter). Also, some cooking accessories are sized just for the wide-mouth Nalgene bottles too, like the Press-Bot coffee press.

Since you need them anyway, scoop up a few of these wide-mouth Nalgene bottles while they’re just $5.49. And since there aren’t direct-links to REI.com products allowed, search for item #402065 for gray lexan or item #664604 for colors.

As a lefty, really like the dual right-and-left pour spouts to keep things easy and all the parts from getting lost in stadium stands or on a ski chairlift.

REI Coupon: 20% Off One Item, May 4-13th

Yosemite hiking cliff picture pic - REI gear saleA big, fat 20% off coupon for any full-price item at REI is in my Saturday LA Times today. No need to run out and try to track one down though, the 20% off coupon is part of REIs anniversary sale and is good on orders placed by mail and phone too. Just mention coupon code ANNV7 at phone checkout or enter it into the coupon code box online and it will apply to the highest-priced camp, hike, or sports gear in your cart - with some exclusions, see small print paraphrased below.

Of course, the coupon’s small print:
Offer isn’t valid on sale items. REI membership required, but you can join for $15 at checkout. Also not valid on special orders, packages, prior purchases, gif cards, services, rentals, bikes, boats, GPS’s, radios, or locator beacons (for once, ski and snowboard gear appears to be eligible - of course, it’s probably on closeout sale already and thus not eligible as a sale item). Merchandise must be in-stock and purchases with this coupon aren’t eligible for the REI member refund.

Altrec Anniversary Sale - Starts This Weekend

Kelty Redwing 3100 backpack daypack Altrec saleAltrec’s 8th anniversary sale started today and they’ve sent a huge amount of outdoor gear to the sale section. Advertisements on their site and the web say “up to 60% off” but most items are 20-30% off. The sale is still worth visiting though, since the selection of items on sale is huge and 20-30% off isn’t a thing to turn your nose up at. Items on sale incluse Osprey and Arc’teryx backpacks, Merrll and Vasque boots, jackets & fleece from The North Face and Patagonia, and even getting-ready-for summer surf trunks and bikinis.

Despite the sale Altrec is keeping their offer of free shipping on orders of $45+, plus no sales tax if your outside of Oregon (or inside, since that state doesn’t have sales tax).
