  • $84 – KEEN Ochoco Waterproof Trail Running Shoe

keen Ochoco Waterproof Mans Trail Running Shoe on saleI was in San Francisco two weeks ago and waterproof-breathable trail running & hiking shoes seemed to be popular with the comfort-minded. Though they weren’t quite as popular with the worried about speed, ultra-lightweight gear crowd.

So, if you’re in the market for waterproof trail shoes Backcountry.com has the men’s KEEN Ochoco shoes for 30% off right now. I’ve been surprised by the comfort of my own KEEN casual shoes, so the 5-star rating of these isn’t much of a surprise. The 1-year warranty is a surprise though – wonder if KEEN will say no to obvious wear-and-tear returns or take that Patagonia route and take anything back. Either way, at $83.97 and with free shipping the Ochoco’s are still available from Backcountry in most sizes from 7 to 13 and even in two colors in the hard-to-find-on-sale men’s 10-12 sizes.

    $18.98 – Patagonia Capilene 2 Men’s Long-Sleeve Crew, 50% Off

Patagonia Capilene 2 Crew Long-Sleeve Mens on salePatagonia is discontinuing their gray (aka “stainless-whale bone”) color of the Capilene 2 long-sleeve crew. Except in 85+° F heat this shirt is great for keeping the sun off or as a lightweight, non-stinky underlayer. Yes, I’ve complained about Capilene’s tendency to get smelly before, but the new “Galdiodor” treatment works a lot better – even though I still think Marmot’s DriClime & Terramar’s EC2 are a bit better and any brand of merino wool long underwear has all the synthetics beat.

Anyway, the Stainless-color of Capilene 2 top is 50% off at Backcountry.com right now. That’s $18.98, available in sizes M, XL, & XXL for now, and still eligible for their free shipping on $50+ orders deal too.

Marmot womens Quest short sleeve DriClime top on saleMarmot’s quick-drying Quest top is on sale at BackcountryOutlet.com. The DriClime fabric is one of the quickest-drying fabrics I’ve ever used, it has a high SPF, and an anti-microbial finish to keep it from getting plain-stinky like most synthetic fabrics.

Right now it’s 60% off, currently in sizes large and extra-small, making it just $11.98 and no coupon required. Plus, grab a few more items and get free shipping on all BackcountryOutlet orders of $50 and up.

19% Off Superfeet Insoles at Moosejaw

superfeet boot shoe support insoles saleIt took a lot of convincing to get me to try my first pair of Superfeet insoles. I managed a department at an outdoor gear store, but refused to spend $20 on a pair (only $20 because prices have gone up in the past decade and because we got a good discount as store employees). I ended up getting a free pair from the Superfeet sales rep. and soon started recommending them to store shoppers. Now I’m recommending them to readers here too (or, if you’re already a Superfeet user just jump to the bottom for the coupon code). Grab the low profile, blue Superfeet insoles to add stability and comfort to athletic shoes and snug fitting hiking boots. Just remember that the ridged, plastic heelcup (on the bottom, not against the foot) can rub against Gore-tex linings and eventually wear holes in them – and that this version of Superfeet have a slightly lower arch support and don’t need much break in.

superfeet boot shoe support insoles high profile saleThe high profile, green Superfeet insoles are great for adding stability and reducing slipping in roomy hiking and mountaineering boots. They also require a good amount of break-in because the thicker arch foam needs to mold to your foot – which also means that they’re the more comfortable version as long as there’s enough room in your footwear for both your foot and these green Superfeet insoles.

Both styles of insoles are on sale for $29.71 at Moosejaw. Just make sure you use the coupon code SUPERSALE at checkout and get an extra 10% off the insoles, making both styles of Superfeet just $26.74.

$120 – The North Face Nuptse Men’s Down Jacket

The North Face Nuptse Men's Down Jacket on sale $120The Nuptse down jacket from TNF is like that guy from highschool who everyone liked – not the quarterback or valedictorian, but always pulling his weight in lab groups and saying “hi” in the halls.

The Nuptse down parka may not be the lightest, toughest, or warmest down jacket on the market, but it is a 1 pound, 10 ounce piece of comfort when it’s cold out. Filled with 700-fill power down to keep the price down and with water-resistant & reinforced shoulders to keep it going for years (and the lifetime The North Face warranty doesn’t hurt either).

And, it’s 40% off at Altrec.com and covered by free shipping right now. That makes it just $119.97 shipped – and it’s still available in at least one color in sizes M – XXL.

Sierra Trading Post Coupon: 7% Off $95+

Coupon 120x60Update: The July coupon is out and is good for 10% off all orders of $100+. All links in this message to Sierra Trading Post have been updated. June coupon valid until August 1st, 2007.

The other day a friend who I’d always thought of as a deal-seeker told me they probably wouldn’t bother with any sale for 10% or less off. I don’t know if that’s really the case, since they’ve gone to great lengths in the past to use two 20% off one item per person coupons, but I did think of them when Sierra Trading Post released their April coupon.

Good for 7% off any order of $95 and up. Maybe not enough to motivate new visitors to buy, but their already low prices on new, brand name gear keep me going back – and I sure won’t turn down an extra 7% off if I’m already planning to buy.

Backcountry Brewing, Coffee & Tea in a Nalgene

pressbot - backcountry camping french press coffee-makerThis one isn’t on sale, but it’s pretty cool if you want a great $20 gift for a serious outdoors person (even if it’s just for yourself). That’s right, no more instant coffee or hard-to-clean, not-so-lightweight, bulky coffee pots in the backcountry when using this Press -Bot compact, french press.

Brew either coffee or tea in a 32-ounce widemouth Nalgene bottle by pouring hot water over the grounds or leaves and then inserting the folded Press -Bot into the top of the bottle. The only tricky part then is pushing the lock ring down to flatten the screen into place (I’d recommend not filling the bottle all the way unless you want to dip the tips of your fingers in for a hot bath). Let the whole thing sit for a few minutes and then slowly press the screen down. Enjoy!

If you can manage to find an item for just 3 cents, or any other item for more, shipping is free at Altrec.com for orders $50+.
