$71.95 – The North Face Venture Stretch Waterproof Shell Jacket

Adding stretch to waterproof fabrics, like GoreTex, is one of the best improvements made to waterproof fabrics in the past several years. Stretch waterproofing is a lot more comfortable than the regular stuff and shell jackets made from it both fit smoother under a pack and are save a few ounces by having less fabric around the shoulders and body. The Stretch Venture jacket from The North Face is a great example – plus it’s in the new Flight Series of ultralight gear from The North Face.

The TNF Venture shell is currently available in L and XL sizes. At $71.95 it’s 48% off the regular price, a major bargain on a waterproof shell that’s both stretch and ultralight.

$229.95 – FSA Carbon Pro Elite Compact Road Crankset

Any cyclists looking for a deal on a quick road bike upgrade? The FSA (Full Speed Ahead) Carbon Pro Elite crankset for road bikes is 30% off at Sierra Trading Post. If you’ve never ridden on a carbon crankset before – at least stop by your local bike shop and take one of their high-end demo bikes for a test ride. I think carbon cranks make a huge difference in ride quality – they’re stiffer but still manage to feel a little smoother on bumpy or long rides.

Anyway, this FSA Carbon crankset is designed for ISIS bottom brackets and (currently) available in 172.5mm and 175mm sizes.

$39.38 – Primus Classic Moonlite Lantern, Seriously Bright and On Sale

Primus Classic Moonlite Lantern at SteepandCheapAnother great deal from Steep and Cheap, half-off the Primus Classic Moonlite lantern is sweet, especially when it’s worth (almost) twice the regular price.

This little thing is one of my favorite pieces of gear to bring on just about any trip. As small and light as it is it’s worth the extra 6-8 ounces for some comfort on backpacking trips, it’s a great heat source during winter trips, and on summer trips that aren’t in the middle of the desert it’s awesome to cheer things up during gloomy or rainy days. It only weighs about 6 ounces (including the protective case) and is smaller than a standard light bulb – but probably puts out as much or more light. At full-burn it gets 9 hours from one small (~200 gram) gas canister, and since you’ll probably only need to run it a half-burn that means any trip less than a week probably won’t even require any extra gas canisters than you already bring.

As usual, some “sounds-like-your-mom” cautions: don’t keep the lantern inside a tent or snow cave without a lot of ventilation or when snow is falling – you could end up suffocating inside the tent when it burns of the oxygen; and don’t keep the lantern right next to where you’re sitting during spring or summer trips because it will bring extra moths and flying things around (the light doesn’t attract any extra mosquitos though, since they can find you perfectly well without any light).

20% Off Arc’teryx Shells, Fleece and Other Clothes at Altrec.com

Arc’teryx makes some of the toughest and lightest gear out there. Altrec.com is marking most of their Arc’teryx gear 20% off at their spring sale. Even though it’s a “20% off sale” I must have missed something because some items are 25-30% off and others are only 10% off or not on sale at all… Still, it’s worth checking out because there is a good selection of Arc’teryx hard shells, soft shells, fleece jackets, and other top-end items on sale (sale ends 5/12/2006).
