Tons of deals lately from Steep and Cheap. Today’s sale is the Moonstone Morpheus hybrid Down-Polarguard Delta sleeping bag. I’m a big fan of Moonstone sleeping bags and this model even got a Backpacker Magazine Editor’s Choice Award. The Morpheus is rated to 20 degrees and only weighs 2 pounds, 11 ounces – not bad for 650-fill down (across the top and sides of the bag) and a wet-weather backup plan of Polarguard Delta insulation (on the bottom and around the feet). $90.19 is a good price for this well-rated, innovative sleeping bag with a lifetime warranty.
As always the price is only good today, 5/29/2006, or until the sleeping bags sell out – whichever comes first.
What a Memorial Day, I headed out the the gas grill today and the auto-ignition switch didn’t work. Turns out that the grill igniter needs an AA battery to make it spark. …even grills need batteries now!
I picked up a few batteries from the grocery store, but for a few dollars more ($10.99 total) I also ordered a 50-pack of AA Alkaline Batteries from Amazon. Grab several packs or something else you’ve been wanting to get the order over $25 and shipping is free too.
20% off ALL Patagonia Capilene shirts and long underwear at Altrec this week. Some of my favorites are their silk-weight boxers, but they’ve got everything from the silkweight t-shirts to the expedition- and R.5-weight tights and long sleeve shirts on sale.
Altrec.com is clearing out the Recon waterproof hard shell from The North Face at 50% off. If I needed another waterproof jacket this one would be on my list at any price – and for $125 it would be a no-brainer to buy. The Recon is extra durable with 3-ply waterproof fabric everywhere and fused seams to save the weight of stitching and seam-seal tape. The North Face sows off their new technology of fusing seams by making them gray – which is a bit ugly, but just enough to make the jacket look cooler. They’ve also kept the traditional pit zips, instead of using those long front pocket-chest-shoulder vents that seem to screw up the fit. One thing I really like about this jacket though, the hood is removable so if it’s snowing or just cold and not raining you don’t have to keep tucking the hood down all day.
Also, a bit more of a discount with free groung shipping on this jacket or any other Altrec order of $45 or more and no sales tax outside of Washington state.
Always a favorite, Steep and Cheap has Arc’teryx’s top-of-the-line Sidewinder Comp softshell jacket on clearance for just $131.25 today. As usual it’s a one-day-only or until-sold-out sale – and it’s worth it for this shell.
The Sidewinder Comp is a hybrid softshell – so the whole body is super-breathable, windproof Schoeller fabric to keep you dry and ventilated when you’re working hard, but the shoulders are a waterproof, semi-breathable laminate fabric to keep you dry and warm when it’s raining lightly or spitting sticky, early/late-season snow. The “sidwinder” name comes from the S-bend in the zipper which keeps the soft-lined collar on your chin and the rubbery, waterproof zipper off it.
The lean and mean Osprey Exposure 36 is the leanest of the Osprey Exposure series of backpacks. It weighs just 2.5 pounds with just enough features for weekend backpacking or a long fastpack trip. Reducing weight (and the chances of a zipper or pocket blowout) there’s just one main compartment with a hydration bladder sleeve on the inside, a lid-pocket and small side GPS pocket, and side compression straps to hold Osprey accessory pockets or skis. Even better is the 25% off on this Osprey backpack at Altrec.
Plus, Altrec offers free shipping on this and any other $45+ order.

Good only through the end of today, REI offers 20% off one item with coupon code 6ANNV. The coupon is only good for REI members, but a lifetime membership is only $15. Discount applies to any of their camping, hiking, and backpacking gear, but not to items already on sale or clearance.
My favorite softshell jacket yet for winter sports is actually a Castelli cycling jacket from several years ago. The fit and light weight of the Castelli jacket is better for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and (of course) cycling than most of the downhill skiing alternatives I’ve tried.
That being said, the Castelli Greg cycling jacket is a big improvement on my old favorite, plus it’s 60% off at Sierra Trading Post right now. It’s hard to beat the Windstopper membrane and stretchy fleece panels for breathable winter sportswear.
The Nuptse down jacket by The North Face is on sale for $139.95 at Sierra Trading Post. Featuring 700 fill-power down and lightweight, 1 pound 10 ounce, construction this affordable jacket started the down craze and now it’s 29% off. Available in red/dark grey and orange/tan colors, don’t forget about Sierra Trading Post’s free shipping weekend deal (expires May 14, 2006) or the 10% off $100+ coupon (expires June 1, 2006).
Double deals at Moosejaw Mountaineering this weekend. First is the 10% off regular priced items and 5% off sale items coupon, just enter the coupon code MOOSE at checkout for the discount. No minimum order required, expires July 1, 2006. The second deal is just for this weekend, free shipping on all orders of $99 and up.
Sierra Trading Post has a free shipping sale this weekend, though May 14th. Just click through, grab some discount camping and hiking gear, and the coupon will be applied at checkout. …also remember the 10% off $100+ coupon, good through June 1st – since that could save you a bit more money as long as you don’t order anything really heavy.
The Mammut Goose Bay down sleeping bag is a top-end 700+ fill-power sleeping bag. This bag weighs only 1 pound, 11 ounces , is still rated to 32-degrees, and it’s on sale for only $97.99. The catch… the bag is only on sale for one day (or until they’re sold out) at Steep and Cheap.
