    $25 - Timbuk2 Metro Mini Messenger Bag, 50% Off

A reader wrote in asking if there were any deals on a Timbuk2 Metro mini messenger bag, in olive green. There is a sale right now on the Metro bag for 50% off at Sierra Trading Post (click the links to see it). The closest they have is an olive green with an orange stripe.

Anytime you you “have” to get a specific color of Timbuk2 bag - check out Timbuk2’s own website and click the “Build Your Own” link at the top. With all the different fabric options and colors there’s definitely well over a million different bags you could put together.

Patagonia Year-End Sale - Now until Feb 27th

Patagonia soft shell jacketFrom a reader of the site, the Patagonia Year-End sale is going on now.

Unfortunately a lot of their best waterproof/breathable gear is already gone for the season, but they do have plenty of awesome soft shells, like the Core Skin jacket and Scythe jacket, and down jackets on sale.

    30% Off Snowshoes. Atlas Snowshoes.

Atlas SnowshoesREI is clearing out all their snowshoes. That means all the major brands: Tubbs, Redfeather, MSR and Atlas (especially Atlas) are on sale.

The snowshoes to look for on sale are Atlas’. Their welded frames are stiffer and stronger and the binding pivots well but flexes a bit, so it feels a lot better on the knees and ankles when the snow gets hard and icy. Also, if you live in an area with mad, fluffy powder - make sure to get shoes that are rated for 10-20 pounds more than you weigh - better float and all. Since I saw them early this monring they’ve already sold out of the mid-sized model, so these should be grabbed fast if you’re looking for deep-snow shoes or snowshoes good for carrying you and a pack (no direct links to REI items, so hit REI.com and search for the item#’s for these sale prices):

$91.05 - Women’s Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket

Just for the ladies, Steep and Cheap is moving the Mountain Hardwear Alchemy softshell jacket today for just $91.05.

That’s 62% off one of the best, truly windproof softshell jackets out there. The Gore Windstopper membrane stops some hardcore winds, but since it’s laminated to a tough Trango fabric instead of fleece - it’s not prone to overheating and sheds water like a wet duck (…just don’t go jumping in any half-frozen ponds). The powerstretch fleece panels make the jacket awesome for any winter sports I can think of - even cross country skiing, ice climbing, and just chasing the dog down when it happens to see those wet ducks.

$306.63 - Scarpa Tornado AT Ski Boots

After clearing out a ton of tele gear lately, Steep and Cheap has the Scarpa AT-style ski boots on sale for just $306.63.

What is AT-style skiing though? Odds are that if you’re shopping for boots like the Tornados - you don’t need to know whatever I’m aboiut to write about it, but here goes anyway: AT gear is stiff like standard ski boots, unlike tele- boots and skis which flex both when walking and skiing. You can ski AT gear just like normal alpine gear, but AT bindings have a pivot and a locking mechanism, so you can tour and climb on them just like tele boards, then the binding can be locked and they ski like alpine gear.

$32.97 - Adidas Jasten Trail Running Shoes

The Adidas Jasten trail runners, are just $32.97 at Altrec.com. Not a great-looking shoe, but neither am I…, but for this price they’re worth it if you’re just giong to get them muddy and tear them up on the trail anyway.

Also, may want to check for anything else you need, because you can get free shipping from Altrec once the order gets to $45+.

$31.97 - Nike Air Zoom Steens II Trail Running Shoe

Extra 25% off on Altrec.com Gear Sale

Altrec must be expecting a lot of spring camping gear and clothes because the knocked another 25% off all the gear in their clearance store for this weekend. Until the 20th they’ve got backpacks, boots, jackets ↦ shells, trail running shoes, and even some nice Mountain Hardware gloves at some pretty deep discounts. The big-ticket stuff, like sleeping bags and tents, looks to be sold out already but there are still deals to be had.

Personally I always like fugly trail running shoes (all trail running shoes are pretty ugly, so you may as well make a statment if you’re trying to wear them to work or elsewhere). So I’m trying to decide between the Nike Air Steens II trail shoes, at $31.97, and the Adidas Jasten trail runners, at $32.97. Either way, at about $32/pair they’ve got to be better than the beat-up, stinky running shoes I’m wearing now. Maybe I can buy both and use the excuse that I was trying to get a $45+ order together - since shipping is free then.

$31.97 - MSR BlackLite Gourmet Ultralight Cookset

It’s not at all fancy but the MSR BlackLite cookset will make it a bit easier to deal with the really important stuff (food!) while backpacking and camping. Only 24 ounces for a big cookset: 2 liter pot, 1.5 liter pot, skillet, separate lid (skillet also works as a lid), MSR’s very good PanHandler pot gripper handle, and a synthetic PackTowl all add up to enough stuff to cook for a group of 6 on two separate stoves. Plus, the pans are all black to help absorb heat better (and use less gas) and are lined with nonstick for easy cleanup.
